LWFW 997.1 GT3
Discussion
Hi,
A number of years ago there was a huge amount of forum chat about modding 997.1 GT3's with a single mass clutch and LWFW setup, some positive and some not so..... With stories of engine crankshaft failures, harmonic in-balance, crankshaft pulley bolts undoing themselves etc.... lots of forum members, Porsche and third party tuning specialist had lots to say, but did anyone really come up with a real world answer?
I fitted single mass clutch and LWFW setup's to both my 996 GT3's, a 996.1 and a 996.2, with no issues. Rallyman bought my 996.2 and enjoyed driving it regularly with great enthusiasm
I have also installed single mass clutch and LWFW setup to my 997.1 GT3 and wanted you know who has done the same, how long ago, who installed, with or without the RS pulley and if any issues.
Hopefully with the feedback posted, other 997.1 GT3 owners can make a managed decision on what route to choose when their clutch is due for replacement.

Fitted a LTW FW from a 964 Cup car IIRC coupled with a 4.0 RS clutch. Standard crank pulley. Did around 3-400 road miles, no problem. Having a lighter fly makes the car even easier to heel & toe. Can't honestly say I noticed any difference between the feel of the clutches. Transmission noise on idle when the 'box is hot - like a biscuit tin of bolts being rattled around the transmission tunnel. I don't mind that.
First time post the modifications on a circuit, braking hard & heel and toeing down the box for the right hander (Croft for what worth, pit straight) crank pulley nut backed out and lost power steering, alternator charge & water pump drive. Got recovered from the circuit.
Then fitted a genuine 997 RS crank pulley - no issues since on road or track days (2,000 miles later).
IME if you're fitting a LTW FW to a non RS 997 GT3, you need to also fit the RS crank damper.
