Just don't call it a PS5 yet. Not till 2020 anyway.

Where's captain_cynic, it was only recently he said confidently that Sony don't have a new console in the pipeline

But lost money overall. The PS4 program still hasn't been paid off.
The PS4 was obsolete when it was released... let alone 6 years later and there is no replacement on the horizon because they cant afford one.

Backwards compatibility all the way to PS1 would be a neat feature, though I doubt many original titles stand tall today.
I currently use my PS4 for streaming etc as well as gamng so would appreciate a slicker user interface. I'd imagine the scope of functionality will increase such that will have to be addressed anyway. It would also be great if there was some means of using PC games on the PS5 i.e. a single games platform rather than a gaming PC and a PlayStation. That is probably too fanciful given the commercial implications.

Yeah they only posted a profit of $2.1 BILLION in 2018, i'm pretty confident they can afford the R&D on a new platform in a market where if they dont there is only one true competitor. captain_cynic said:

I may be lagging behind somewhat here but it was my understanding that current titles still didn't utilitse the full potential of the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X?
I picked up a One X after upgrading to a 4K TV last year and whilst there was a step up in performance and graphics, it wasn't quite the quantum leap I expected for a much more powerful unit. Presumably there is a bit of improvement to come yet with the current 'Pro' consoles before the next generation comes in - they are hardly being overworked with current titles (on the One X anyway).

Game developers have had ps5 dev kits for over a year now too so how he could have come to that conclusion I don't know.captain_cynic said:

I am exited by what I have heard. If the backwards compatibility is as good as their patents suggest It will be my first day 1 console purchase in over 12 years.
I am also quite interested in the VR. Although I don't really want to play a full VR game I like the idea of putting on a VR headset, loading up FFXV and wandering round the world in 1st person camera mode.

I for one am pleased I just got myself a PS4 Pro to upgrade from my release day PS4.....
I just bought a 4k OLED so wonder if I should do the same, but I would be annoyed if PS5 dropped within the year...You can call it a PlayStation 5 now

So next Xmas then? I wonder if the whatevertheycallit XBOX version will arrive before or after?
The first link was interesting to me, SSDs aren't exactly news anymore, it sounds to a muggle like me that they're going to jump past all the bottleneck of SATA/PCiE and all that by mounting the storage on the MOBO.
I look forward to buying one a year after lunch, I can't justify £500 on a console, I pay an hour or two a week I'd guess.
I might try to snag a cheap Xbox One X though.

Just started a new PS5 thread then spotted this, so quickly deleted it
The PS5 seems to follow the current trend of Playstation's being released every 6 to 7 years, which can be expected due to hardware advances
I do think the PS4 has been the most disappointing of the lot when it comes to actual games. Especially when I think GTA5 and The Last of Us where PS3 releases. Apart from a few gems, a lot of the games seemed to be remastered.
With little specs announced so far apart from a SSD drive and a new controller which will bring a new vibration feature I am sure it will be a full on upgrade on hardware. I would like to say an actual 4k disk player but lets be honest, physical 4K and Blue Ray disk sales are down so I doubt it. Also will it actually have a disk drive? I remember the rumours about the new PS4 being online downloads only.
Ill purchase day 1 like I have with the previous Playstation's but I am pretty sure this console will be the last actual physical gaming machine from Sony and Microsoft as streaming in another 7 years will take over.
