I test rode the Hypermotard 950 in Bristol at the weekend and it's got me thinking.

I went there with no intention of changing bikes, just wanted to try something different. My current fleet consists of a 2017 MT10, 2012 Ducati 848 evo and a 2003 GSXR 600 which will be staying for use as a track bike.

The MT10 will probably stay as the all weather, do everything bike which leaves the 848. Searching around ebay/bike trader/mcn etc, it seems that they've held their value to the point I can sell it for very little loss after 2 years enjoyment.

That brings me on to the point of this post. What is a hypermotard like to live with? It would solely be used for A/B road blasts to the seaside. Any longer trips (SW England to Perthshire to visit family) it would be trailered the majority of the way then used to blast through the cairngorms.

What is the service schedule like on them? Still 2 year belts etc?

I'd most likely be looking at a late 821 or early 939 SP

Any thoughts or experiences welcomed

Cheers

The HM950 is 12 months/9k miles for normal servicing, valve clearances after 18k.

Biggest bugbears are short range and lack of wind protection, but as you've said it's for hooning around rather than big trips. Sounds perfect to me.

Yes.

Was always late with their half of the rent, and drank all my hot chocolate.

I have had one since 2007 the early 1100 .The fuel range is a issue but the bike is fantastic fun without the need for high speed .I cant see myself having anything else or going back to sports bikes

Good to know about the servicing. I'd probably not spend 950 money but I'd imagine the 821 and 939 will be similar being evolutions of the same engine.

I've got my gsxr for track stuff so that box is ticked anyway

You've both mentioned the range, how bad is it? My MT10 is max 130 miles till the light but usually closer to 100, 848 is normally about 90 to 100.

I cant really remember the range as I just use it for fun, and its that . The only time it was a issue when I went to Lemans on it .Ive got a 748 and ridden the 848 .I just got on a Hyper and it was the bike for me ,I did contemplate a 939sp 950 etc but I love the air cooled 1100 torque.
So yes they do fun very well

I ran a Hyperstrada 821, same bike juts a tad more practical, 13000 miles in just over 2 and a bit years, was great fun for throwing around, decent tyres made a huge diffrence, rider modes meant either mental, slightly mental or ride like you stole it, the power is accessible which means you can wind it on and not worry about going to prison, maintenence was reasonable, didn't seem over the top compared to my 996 / 999 which cost a lot more to keep going ..... good buy and had they not dropped the Strada I'd have got another rather than the Multi.

I hadn't even thought of the Hyperstrada. I assume the screen and panniers are easy to remove when you just want it as a hooligan bike but more practical if you want to do longer trips. It's on my list now too!

No point removing the screen as it's not huge, panniers take 30 seconds to unclip.

I sold my Hyperstrada last year, it was the best fun i've had on two wheels. as above the power is useable so you can wring its neck and still stay at semi legal speeds whereas on any of the sportsbikes i've riden to get any fun out of them you needed to be on it 100% of the time.

Fuel wise it would nearly always get 100 miles to a tank, I did manage 130ish once on a long fairly sedate ride, as above the paniers clip off in seconds and the screen barely made a difference.
