Right, the evenings are getting light, and the weekends are getting warmer/drier. It's time to invest in a BBQ.

For reasons that are too long to list, I'm looking at a gas grill/BBQ. I'd imagine it will be getting about 70% of its use just for MrsR and I, with the occasional group of 6-8ppl.

It needs to be able to survive outside under a cover, because I don't have the luxury of a shed/outhouse to hide it in over the winter.

I'm pretty tall (6ft3), so it would help to have something that I don't need to bend over to use.

Depending on where you are, I know someone who has this.
Never used, it's been stored in her garage for a few years, near Odiham (M3) I'm sure she could be "persuaded" to part with it...sorry if this breaks posting rules...

Thanks for the kind offer.

By the time I'd hired something to carry it and spent a day getting it collected, I may as well have had one delivered from the internet.

I'll DM you anyway, but I suspect you may be better on Gumtree or similar.

Webers are okay but Napoleons are better. I'm having one of these when I've got some spare cash: https://www.bbqworld.co.uk/napoleon/napoleon-prest...

I also bought this model last year and it performs perfectly for our family. Lives outside under the cover and simply does what it says on the tin (box).

Usual PH adage, buy cheap etc.

I'd happily volunteer the Broilking I have as a great result for you - https://broilkingbbq.com/grills/sovereign/sovereig...

The race team we worked with used one as the mobile kitchen for 10 years, and I ran it for 5, before it started to show its age, so I bought another just the same 6 years ago, and by chance just flicked it on for a burger now at lunch.

Get with a spit, as for feeding a crowd an easy pleaser - Rolled Pork Belly for example, has the crowd salivating with zero effort. Or a pair of Chickens etc etc.

I bought it at the end of season knowing I was getting it for the long game. I use it more or less daily from May through September as just outside the kitchen door. I use it through the winter too for some stuff / steaks etc.

Top purchase.

ETA - UK link and holy st how much do they want for it? https://www.bedsbbq.co.uk/barbecue-shop/Broil-King...

I'm sure I paid nearer £750..... meaning it was this one :

Still - Highly recommend the Broilking

We've got the Outback Excel 310.

Only really use it for small or quick gatherings, if i'm doing it properly I get the Weber out.

However have been very happy with the Outback and it's stood outside all winter under it's cover.

Seems to be available for about £150

I rarely quibble about spending money on things, but I'm not blowing £500+ on a BBQ to be used a couple of times a year...

Looks small. Would you consider it to cook for 8?

Depends what you're cooking I guess.

8 would be pushing it to be fair. You'd get 8 burgers on the grill couple of sausages in between but that would probably be about it. It has a warming tray to keep stuff warm though if you want to shuffle things around.

£350? with cast iron grills and will last 10 years plus. Been through cheap ones and had an Outback for six years but when it started rusting no spare parts available. My Weber is five ish years old and almost looks like new. Upgrade to get an electric rotisserie and you will use it far more often than a couple of times a year. Ours will be out this weekend and between the gas and the charcoal weber used every week through to october

but that is the point - place it in the right place and use it all the time.
BBQ's that 'just work / have loads of space are as versatile as a cooker.

I do breakfasts on mine, any meat / fish that needs cooking between May and October is mostly done on the Grill.
Healthier, and no washing up.

Just work out where to use it easier.

BBQ FTW !

All of that is lovely, but it doesn't change the fact that we probably only eat at home together around 50% of the time. We both travel with work a lot, and we eat out 2-3 nights a week most weeks.

This isn't something to fundamentally change my life, or to reinvent the way I cook. It's something to help me BBQ easily when the weather is good and I feel like it.

See my post earlier. That outback one is fine for that.

It's what I did last night, the day was warm so I decided to have a steak, went to Sainsburys on the way home.

Took the cover off for the first time this year, quick wipe down and cooked steak for me and burger for the boy - perfect.

Until 3-years ago, I was a confirmed charcoal user.

As a trial, I bought a cheapo 3-burner and side ring gas BBQ for €160. It’s grill area is split 50% with a plancha. Whenever possible, weather wise, we are able to use this several times a week, basically as an outdoor cooking range. With a plancha it is great for cooking fish and other delicate items. The side ring is virtually useless as on low it blows out and on high, it is just way too hot, other than for boiling potatoes - which we never do anyway. I find that the grill side is fine for steaks, or kebabs, but not as good as charcoal for big pieces of meat. I also use it for slow-frying a pan of onions, and the like.

in short, I don’t think that you need to spend a lot of money, if you have a decent cover. Wings either side are useful for serving, but probably not a side ring. If you enjoy cooking, a plancha is essential.
