ICO - Age appropriate design code - consultation
Discussion
https://ico.org.uk/media/about-the-ico/consultatio...
The ICO have pushed out a consultation, which is being suggested may be enforced as early as this summer...
using the GDPR etc. new legislations to push back at social media / apps / games companies / etc. around how children are dealt with...
the interesting impact of this is that they are basically saying:
- get it sorted or we are after you for 4% of your global turnover as a fine
- if you can't work out when a user is a minor / of a specific age - then you must treat all users as the youngest age common denominator - i.e. it will impact everyone because it would force the companies to handle data for adults as though for children - by default switching off tracking / etc.
- it opens up an interesting technical discussion around age verification - the suggestion is that quite stringent verification with paper ID / evidence may be required - just ticking a box saying I am over 13 being considered insufficient...
if this happens / is enforced - it has the potential to considerably alter the landscape of many of the major players - including impacting their business models / revenue streams / etc.
very interesting - but not a lot of noise about it...
