Range Rover Sport 4.2 Supercharged

Hi all I'm interested in buying a 2005-2009 Range Rover Sport 4.2 Supercharged V8 model. How are this era for reliability. I've had a Jaguar XF 4.2 Sv8 for a while now which is the same engine and it has been totally reliable in that time. Just need the extra room now hence wanting the Range Rover. But don't want one if its gonna be in the garage every 5 minutes for repairs. Are they as bad as people say they are if so I'll look elsewhere but was hoping to hear some different opinions from people that have actually owned them

You won't get many informative posts on PH about this. Every contributor will know someone who knows someone who once heard about a RRS that spent 13 months out of the year at the garage being fixed at a cost of eleventy billion pounds.

Yeah I suppose your right. I have heard all the horror stories but I'm pretty sure they cant be all bad. I see too many on the road and if they were as bad as some say, nobody would buy them surely. I'll try the Range Rover forums and see if I get any better help there. Thanks for your time anyway

And when questioned they have never actually owned a Land/Range Rover!

They can be fantastic, or they can be absolute pigs. You hear the bad experiences more often than the good.

I’ve owned 2 Range Rover sports. 2.7 diesel reliability was OK, 5.0 SC reliability was absolutely shocking. Both of mine had excellent history. I don’t have any experience of the 4.2 specifically.

Then you get my dad who has had 2, has done loads of miles and they’ve been good as gold. It really can be pot luck with them. You take a ticket when you buy one in my opinion.

Reliability aside, I also found the OEM ARB bushes needed replacing annually on my 58 and 59. They are crap, and will start squeaking and have play after a few thousand miles. Checking air suspension is important when looking at them as well. My 2.7 was listing after a while and needed ride height calibration and a new height sensor fitted.

That said they are wonderful things to drive, and I’ll probably have another in the future. They are supremely comfortable and the driving position is just great.
