Engine Trouble

Help, the suns shinning and I'm worried about driving the beast! Can someone help me out please?

It started as an intermittent problem with engine power loss for a split second at c.2000 revs. The local TVR dealer had a look and suggested replacing the fuel punp relays (which they did). Ok for a while and now it's happening again intermittently on nearly every run out (quite scary when it happens at speed!).
It's still only happening for a split second or so and it feels like no fuels getting to the engine??
I'm no mechanic but reading previous threads here, I've checked the HT leads are on, cleaned the stepper motor, checked for error codes on the ECU (none), spark plugs and all looks ok. :confused:
It does it when the temp is 70 or above, usually on or above 2000 revs. There's no loss of ignition / electrics as everything else works. When it does it, I just dip the clutch and rev it and power comes back. I've checked the bible and cannot find a similar problem mentioned. Anybody got any ideas? Cheers.

Not sure I can offer much help here but at least I can bump it back to the top for others to see.

What age is the car and how many miles? When last serviced?

Does the power loss happen with a full tank of petrol? When you open the tank is there a strong suction? I'm trying to exclude a blocked/restricted breather caused by a gummed up line to the carbon cannister (through which the tank breathes) or by a blocked cc. Either could cause vacuum in the tank which could impede flow through the pump.

Hope someone else is along to help soon.

I would double check the HT leads, had a similiar problem last year an done was shorting out on teh manifold, check they are on properly too as can feel like they are and there not .. need to click on.
Otherwise it could be anumber of different things, sensors etc, Get it to the pros.

Thanks for the advice, checked HT leads again + they all click on OK! Just been out and it's still doing it??

Hut, the cars Jan.96 done 37k miles, the problem seems to exist when tank full / half full, I never run the car less than half full. Also no hiss / presure when I take off the filler cap??

Is this looking like a costly pro bill investigating the problem chaps?

It's probably something simple (my guess would be throttle pot from those symptoms). I suggest you get it along to a TVR dealer/specialist to sort out. It needn't cost a lot to fix and will let you get back to enjoying the car.

Cheers Peter, I'm hoping it is something simple, I'll make the call to the local dealer and post the fix if they get it sorted. Any bets on how much it will cost, I'll start with at least 200 quid!

The symptoms are identical to the grief I experienced caused by throttle potentiometer - expertly sorted by Tower View Race of London, who replaced the TVR item with an adjustable one - 4 years on, the car has not missed a beat - hope you get it sorted.

Is the breather - purge valve to the carbon canister OK? - you should be able to just plug up the plenum connection to check. Sounds about the time the engine schedules a purge event....

Just picked up Chim from TVR Specialist who changed the throttle pot. Driven over 70 miles so far and no repeat of problem (so far!). Hopefully it's sorted now. Cheers chaps.

Its taken a month to change a throttle pot??

It certainly is, indeed, especially when the engine cuts out altogether!

And also when it (ie, mine) dies on a blind bend and won't restart...
