I put a refurbished steering rack in the car and I’ve found that it’s off-centre and it’s not something I can take out with just tracking.

The problem is that I have more left turn than right turn.

When I lock the steering wheel fully to the left the front RHS wheel fouls against the suspension.

When I lock fully to the right it doesn’t happen.

This suggests to me that it’s not just a case of having put it together 1 spline out or something like that.

Is there any known fix for this without having to pull it all apart again or am I just facing the inevitable ......?

We're the nylon spacers put back on the rack before the track rods?

Steering wheel maybe out of alignment.

Not to hard to fix, may need to undo the ujs in the wheel arch to move the steering wheel to centre.

This ^^^^^^^^
Mark both u/j and shaft if possible before removing, might take a couple of attempts to get it spot when re alighning

I’ve got no idea about the spacers. The rack had been refurbished and was back together when I got it.

Can someone please give me some more information about these (what they look like / where they go / etc).

As for the spline alignment I am not convinced that this is the issue..

Even if it is a spline out and I realign it the fact remains that it has more turning movement on one side than the other. Surely this will remain the same whether it’s a spline to the left or to the right.

By the look of your profile photo, it appears to have the 18" spiders. Mine were fitted aftermarket and there is a receipt in the history for lock-stops. These are fitted to the ends of the rack, increasing the turning circle but stops the wider wheels fouling on the suspension arms.

You will need these as well as it being centralised if they're not fitted.

The spiders in the profile pic are 16” but the ones on the car now (since Saturday) are 18”

Can someone please post a link to these stops.

I’m going to have to check if perhaps there’s is only 1 fitted, perhaps a mistake was made in the reassembly after the refurb

It is possible to have it a spline or 2 out.. I would remove the U/J's and go back to basics.. Could even be a case of removing the steering wheel to re-centre and re-align.

If the wheel is hitting the suspension with 18” spiders, you are almost certainly missing the lock stop on that side:

Yes you're right, this isn't a case of the intermediate shafts and ujs being a spline out, it's a lock stop issue.

First thing .. on the side that doesn't catch is the wheel miles off the wishbone ? it might be a case that they've fitted all the stops to one side, and you might be able to remove one and fit it to the other side (they're a cut snap ring affair, you only have to slide the steering boot back to remove/fit them).

Or if that's not the case then just buy the lock stop from the tvr shop linked above.

When going from 16s to 18s it's usually the case that you have to fit lock stops so what you've experienced isn't unusual.

A root in my bits box revealed these, which I think are what I took off mine when I went from Spiders back to RL7s. They look to be nylon approx ID-24mm OD -37mm thickness 4mm.

Thanks folks.

Hopefully I'll get a chance to get at it over the next few evenings and see if they're not in there or perhaps all in one side.

Yep I had exactly the same issue.
The spacers in the picture above are in addition to the steering lock stops that HAVE to be fitted before the track rod is screwed back onto the rack.
Happy to chat further if you need any additional points. I’ve finally got mine sorted.
Here’s a picture of the nylon stop that you need on both sides.

Does this mean that there's a possibility that the rack could have to come out and be split?

redface

Surely the 16" Spiders would also have rubbed if those end stops were missing?????

Nope, you shouldn’t have to remove the rack.
I sorted mine in situ but did need to get the 2 nylon bushes/stop locks machines down to the correct length.
I’m now exactly 1 turn each way rather than 3/4 one way and 1 and 1/4 the other.

Just remove the track rods. Slip them on and reassemble.

New clips for the gaitors will be needed.

I got it sorted in the end.

One of the stops was actually missing.

I took one off the old rack that came out of the car and that sorted it.

Happy days.

Now all it needs is a trip to the NCT (Irish equivalent of MOT only stricter) centre and bit of road tax for 3 months (€500-ish for the 3 months) and it'll hopefully be back on the road next month.

We are so lucky in the UK, and few people here realise

Most European countries are incredibly punitive

Running a 'classic' or wannabe classic here is so much easier financially
