Matt paint instead of metallic?
Discussion
Help!
I'm trying to repair some stone chips on my bonnet which have started to rust. Removing the rust, not an issue. Chemically stopped, chips then filled with a small amount of filler and panel rubbed down to a smooth finish. All good so far. Bought a can of 'Audi Brilliant Red' paint from Halfords, and had a go the other week. Unfortunately it seems to have a matt finish rather than a nice metallic finish, although the can doesn't say anything about a lacquer. So... have I bought the wrong thing, or do I just need to lacquer and then blend the paint in, or do I blend first and then lacquer??
Or stop being a cheap ass and take it a body shop who will sort it out properly, albeit not even lube me up before handing over the bill?

Well that would explain it. Best go find some paint codes.
EDIT - paint code is LY3J which translates as Brilliant Red. Will get a picture of the paint to explain.
Here we go, on the RHS it looks dull and matt, on the left hand side nice and reflective. The paint feels different, and holds water differently too. Is that simply a lack of lacquer?

Go back to Halfords and ask them.
Bonnets need completely respraying, they are not suitable for SMART type repairs.
Even if you do squirt a bit of clearcoat over the paint you've sprayed you will then have a noticable line at the edge of the clearcoat.
LY3J is Brilliant Red and a solid colour - as in not metallic. Likely it's a clear over base anyway so the colour coat will be matt & the clearcoat is what gives the shine.
