Caravan tow car that’s not a 4x4

Hi all,

I’ve been trying to chose a car for some time now. I need it to be able to tow a caravan but be my daily driver. Therefore I’d like something ‘sexy’.
Anyone tow with anything that’s not a 4x4 and is interesting?

Why would you neee a 4x4 unless you are planning going well off road into muddy fields?

Get a powerful rear wheel drive - 6 cylinder Bmw or Merc, depends how heavy your caravan is but I’d suggest 330d/530d, 335d/535d.

I’ve had a 335 before. The boots something of an issue. Would like to be able to fit my fishin box in.

How much are you looking to spend? Of the Mark I'd say an E Class/5 Series/XF would be a good place to start.

10-12k. Really depends.

If I could get a 4x4 for that that was a luxury mark I’d take it. Price wise though an e class seems better value.

As I once towed a small 4 berth van with a Skoda Fabia TDi no problem at all.

I like the e350. It’s a beautiful motor. I fancy the coupe though. Need to check out the boot or see if I can get a roof box.

1400 kgs. I had a golf gtd. Wish I’d kept it. Was advised it was too light for the job.

That would be people on about the 85% rule,
Your golf would have just about been OK towing about 100%.
Is it your first van?

It is yes. That why I got rid in the end. Didn’t fancy it flipping my car.

A friend of my dad tows with a E350 CDI Cabriolet SE, it's not a big van (just a little 2 berther) but having the drop top is ideal for when they go touring around Europe.

Depends on how heavy your van is.

Don’t make the mistake of towing a large van with a small vehicle

Coupes are plentiful & along with the split folding rear seat (something that's not standard on the saloon) means you get lots of boot space & yes roof boxes will work.

These are a nice looking motor. I am starting to lean towards one.
