Giving new buyer complete V5 without filling in - bit dodgy isnt it?
Got a car dealer trying to talk me into it because they don't want another owner on there. Hmmm Isnt there a section for that i.e selling to a dealer?
Otherwise, how do I stop paying for the car tax on it? Also, aren't I still liable for things like speeding tickets/parking fines etc?

Not keen. Well dodgy or is this done normally?

Fill in the yellow section (might even be able to do it online) and send it off, give the dealer the rest of the V5. It is different to the selling to a private buyer, as of course they don't want an extra owner added. May have the sign the bottom of the green bit too, can't remember but it is all explained on the back.

Car dealer can fill out the yellow section to stop dvla adding a owner, unless they are not a real dealer of course...

Just remember if you give the full v5 any parking tickets/speeding tickets etc will be hard to dispute even with a sales invoice/receipt.

Eta: beaten!

Just fill in a transfer of ownership online on the DVLA website and put it down as being sold to a dealer that way. You can then give the dealer the whole log book if he/she wants it.

Just do what it says on the V5. No need to phone anyone.

I did mine online to a trader. Done within seconds and can get a email saying its done. If you've already given them the V5 I'd still do it online.

Dont you need document id off front of VT though?

Also, if you do this does that mean it doesn't add another owner? Thats why the guy wanted the V5.

If you fill out the yellow section on v5 that you are selling to a trader it doesn't add a owner.

If you tick the box online that says you are selling to a trader it doesn't add a owner.

If you just give him the V5 signed, this won't add a owner until he sells it, but means that YOU are responsible for all offences involving the car until he sells it.

Why is this so difficult to understand?

OK. I get it. I guess I'll just go online and flag as trader.

The only reason I could see him being arsey about this is if he is not really a trader. In which case declare him as the new owner. But don't just give him the V5 without filling it out OR filling out the online web form.

Either way take a photo of your V5 now (so you have the ref number) and get his name and address/garage name as you are responsible for informing the DVLA of this.
