I started a thread here almost a year ago when I started to think about buying myself a 'nice' watch. After some Olympic class procrastination I've finally bought one!

I went round and round the bowl trying to make a decision, although it was always going to be an Omega. My late father was never without his seamaster and, right or wrong, I felt a connection.

I eventually settled on the 2254.50, it looks right to me and I think it's a modern classic of sorts.

After months and months of ebay, chrono24, & general looking about I've got one on my wrist. Recently serviced, full set, and a decent price.

I need to get the bracelet sized, but I actually prefer it on the nato so I'll more than likely stick with that.

Slightly weird thing when I started it up at first - it was gaining about 10 minutes per hour. It's now settled down and seems to be keeping time well. I thought it might be magnetised but I've no idea.

Anyway, first picture..

Lovely thing, that!

I would agree - NATO straps are the way forward.

Nice. A mate at work has a 2254 and usually wears it on a NATO. To me, there’s just something “right” about the whole look of the watch. It’s a great choice and to my mind, so much nicer and more understated than a lot of the current Seamaster/Planet Ocean choices.

If you don’t mind me asking, how much did you end up paying? If that’s impolite, feel free to tell me where to go!

Either way, I think it’s a fantastic choice and a great watch.

Thank you, I agree!

After a great deal of watching these things come & go I ended up buying this on eBay (from a private seller) for £1400 delivered. That was the watch on it's original bracelet (too big for me), boxed with two cards (chronometer certificate missing), and having been serviced by Swiss Time Services in January this year at a cost of just over £250.

It's not perfect, the bezel is a little marked, but I intend it to be a daily and a such I think it fits the bill.

The nato is a Zuludiver which cost £18, also from ebay.

I think that stacks up pretty well. I've seen worse sell for more in the time I've been looking.

There's a really nice patina on that one- just the right balance of light marking to show it's been well-loved, without the kind of damage that signifies carelessness or abuse.

Cheers. That’s a lot of watch for the money, I think. And if you did happen to be bothered about the bezel, I’m sure you could always get a replacement insert sorted. But as you say, it doesn’t detract at all as it is.

Given the reasoning for your purchase OP it's as good as a heirloom, and a great one at that.

Congratulations thumbup

I 'invested' in one of those as I heard they're going up in value compared to my more recent pre-ceramic 'Bond' model which I could then sell. Really though this just means I'm going to keep that on a NATO strap for casual wear, with the Bond on the bracelet.

Good choice. Enjoy.

Thanks.

I actually had my Dad's seamaster after he died, I don't recall it's exact vintage but it was late 50's. At that time I was convinced that I'd never wear it, it wasn't my style, and it wasn't my watch. With that mindset I had it serviced, kept it aside, and only wore it once - at the wedding of my niece. After that I gave it to my brother in law. Long story, but he hasn't got any family apart from us and it seemed like a good thing to do. He's also a watch lover and already had a liking for omegas. Plus I knew my sister would make sure it was looked after!

I've reflected on that a few times and wonder if I should have kept it, but there you go. This way I actually get a watch that I'm going to wear regularly. It's my choice, just like my Dad's watch was his choice. He'd like the idea that I got a good buy too biggrin

Nice, I really do love the 2254.50, I sold my 2531.50 over the weekend, I wore it on a navy nato.
Sort if thinking I may regret letting it go.

Definitely on my list. The sword hands are so much better than the newer versions.

A fine choice, and one I made years ago as my first decent watch. I'll never sell it. They're a future classic for sure. Enjoy it!

As Fallingup says, I too think the sword hands are much better. I’m really not a fan of the style of the hands in the one pictured, they just don’t look “right” to my eye and spoil an otherwise great watch.

It’s strange what people like though - there are a couple of watches I REALLY like, but there’s just one detail, usually very minor, which puts me off. It’s usually the font on the face (I’m thinking of the “copperplate” style on the Magrette watches and I think there’s a Longines one too, where the word “Automatic” is in a similar font and it just ruins the whole watch for me.

I’m thinking I’m going to have to scratch that “2254 itch” at some point! Apart from the usual suspects (TZ, Watchuseek, etc), are there any Omega forums/Facebook pages worth looking at?

I’ve got my Dad’s 1956 Seamaster, which is only worth a few hundred quid in monetary terms, but to me, it’s irreplaceable and priceless. I’ve even got the original receipt and guarantee from when it was bought in Nigeria (my Dad was working out there for what was then the Colonial Service).

I dislike all Christopher Wards because of those two words written on the face, it's just strange.

It's not that, it's the way they present it on the face more than the words themselves.

Very nice. I've got a similar "dilema". I've inherited my dad's 1940s Omega 30T2. Lovely watch but it is a bit too small and gold for me, so I doubt I'd ever wear it, but I'd still like something with a connection. I've had my eye on a Speedmaster, but just trying out some Seikos for a while to see if I get back into watch wearing before taking the plunge.

Gorgeous. Think I’ll try my seamaster on a NATO now.
