Is Castle Coombe in any driving Sim? Want to learn the track a bit and can’t find one that features it....

Thanks

It was in (at least, maybe some of the others, I certainly played it in back in the day) TOCA3:

But you might be better off watching https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eIZVvnm7xg

And even better, hiring an instructor for your first stint... well worth the extra money, I do it at every new circuit.

In the meantime, remember they built a bank for lots of people to sit on at Quarry for a good reason wink

I’m fairly sure the only model of Combe is the TOCA one. It’s cropped up on a PC sim or 2 but it’s the TOCA one restyled and its not very accurate.

Which trackday are you going on there?

To be fair to Combe they are quite good with their guide cone placement as a solid base to work from.
Your line into and through Quarry and Old Paddock are dependent on your cars weight power and grip

Not a track day racing there on Monday the 6th.

It’s one of very few UK tracks I haven’t raced at. Just wanted to do a few laps on my sim rig before testing as I find it saves a bit of time learning the basics.

Not even sure what lap times to be aiming for really, I’m guessing 1:07 ish but the times seem to vary a lot!

Balls. I've seen some pretty slow cars being flung through Quarry far far faster than some very well prepared race cars.

Using every inch of the exit on quarry is where the speed seems to be.

Has to be said I would love to see Castle Combe on more racing games!!!

The instructors at Combe will tell you the same as I said.
If you have something that can corner at high speed or have a lot of grunt to power out with you can brake later and straighter into Quarry and take a tighter line in and lose nothing on the way out. If you have a car that struggles through corners or has relatively little power you want to preserve the momentum through the corner more so stay to the left over Avon Rise and open up Quarry a bit.
Similarly with Old Paddock there are 2 very different lines depending on if your car can make it round there flat or not from the Esses.

Corner speed is what we have loads of, my worry with Coombe is that we’re not the most powerful car out there (less than 500bhp) I think the key for us is going to be carrying more speed through the corners than the quicker cars. Not sure how mine is going to like the track surface either....

Lol, hoping to do both the Coombe GT’s and the TVR’s.

Don’t worry most of my early racing life was with the Tivs

If you have a sim rig then you surely have Assetto Corsa? If not, do so. The modding community is... significant

First one that came up on Google, there may be alternatives...

https://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/castle-co...

AC also has VR support, 100% worth it for learning as you can actually see elevation and see things around you etc.

Its not bad, good for getting a general idea where the track goes and the lines but is a bit flat if you are looking for nuances, if the OP is driving something quick enough to be sub 1.10 he is going to be flying round there and want to know where the car is going to go light/ compress.
There is quite a camber / compression through the 2nd chicane Bobbies that you can carry a lot of speed through with a late entry, something light or powerful RWD may get a bit sketchy if you stay to tight on the right kink after that too as there is a bit of a bump on the apex.
The approach to quarry is a bit steeper in real life too so firing over the crest flat out and hoping to stop after is not going to happen like in the game.
Old Paddock and Tower can be a bit tricky with the camber and entry too

An accurate model of Castle Combe would be great... there's a few approaches to Quarry I'd like to experiment with but I'm too scared in real life - e.g don't brake over Avon Rise keep left and pin the brakes. As opposed to my current line, dab brakes before rise, ease off brakes then brake in the middle of the track before turn in - which doesn't feel ideal.

One word of caution be careful at camp corner after dean straight (Last corner before start finish line)

Seen plenty of cars smashing into the barrier due to being cocky and carrying too much speed round that bend

Watch some on car youtube vids to give you a feel of the circuit?

I'm not saying any of your advice is wrong nor disagreeing with your post. Im saying that for the most part it's how brave you feel around quarry. Some people are clearly not afraid of understeering.

As it happens when I had some tuition with Tony Hutchins he advised using more kerb on the exit of quarry an taking a shallower entry. I was previously turning in too soon and losing speed by exiting approximately 1- 2 car widths from the kerb as I've seen too many people stuffing it into the tyre wall.

We went testing today to learn the track. Interesting circuit......

Not sure my car likes the bumps and it certainly felt quite edgy in places but feel happy with the layout and where I can find extra time. Strangely I was hitting a higher top speed on the main straight than anywhere else in the uk.... didn’t expect that!

I’m possibly well off but I have something in the depths of my mind that says it was the fastest circuit in the UK before the chicanes were added for safety?

I suppose for the main “straight” you do come on to it at a higher speed than most, it’s a decent length and mostly downhill slightly. The only place I have had similar speed is Hangar Straight at Silverstone
