As per the title, how quickly does a P45 take to turn up? I've got to bring mine with me on my first day at my new job. I'll be handing my (weeks) notice in around two weeks before I start at my new job. Maybe a little earlier.

Thanks smile

You'd be better off asking your payroll dept than here.

Chances are you will be on emergency tax for a week or two.

In theory about a week after the last payroll you are "on" is processed. In practice anywhere between 1 week and never dependent on how competent your payroll department is. The best thing you could do is drop them an email reminding them you're leaving and that you need your P45 sending to your home address.

How do you get your payslips (is it email or hard copy through the post)?

Thanks all smile. Not sure how important it is i bring it on day one (this will only be the second company I've worked for in 12 years).

Payslips are accessed online at the moment.

Places that do online payslips can usually do online P45 and P60s. If not they should definitely be able to email it to you.

It's not that important to get it in on Day 1 but the sooner you get it in the sooner you pay the correct tax.

As Countdown says .. P45 is only about paying the right tax.. so you will pay the wrong tax for a while until the taxcodes catch up ( update your details on the hmrc site and that would normally trigger a new code .. and eventually you will get any overpaid tax back )

HR departments seem upset when you dont provide one though :-) My last two job moves .. they seemed very keen to see them , i guess they want to check your previous salary - as they seem most put out when i said I didnt need one.

( in both cases i wasnt being awkward .. or hidding previous salary - i just happend to finish work in one tax year and start in the next - so a P45 wasnt required !

I usually get mine within about three months, but I promise to try harder this time.
