Examples of iconic and instantly recognisable, no frills engineering designed to do a job with the minimum of fuss.

What else is there? Bahco adjustable spanner? Converse trainers?

The free screwdrivers you get with Halfords oil

Had mine 20 years, they have travelled the world with me (I’m lonely), fixed hundreds of cars and done up many houses

I suspect the free set is not the same quality these days

Absolutely! Quite simply the best turntables ever made. I just wish I never sold mine.

I've got a set in the house, a set in my garage tool chest and three more sets sat unopened on a garage shelf.

I’m listening..... mine were “lost”

Might one relieve sir of a set for some currency?

I'll take your word for it. Perhaps not the 'global reach' of some of the other items though. I certainly can't picture them (and have a few 90's era Halfords kits).

In a more serious reply I was thinking about this the other day.

What’s the collectives thought about seeing something where most people around the age of 40 today would instantly recognise as quality? Or something you know that when you buy you will have it for the rest of your life and likely generations to come?

Sorry for the thread derail OP

Rolex Submariner.

Okay, it's become an expensive item of jewellery, but nonetheless I think it qualifies.
