Hi,

Anyone got a cheap solution to protecting the front end from chips and rubber on a trackday?

There are a few vinyl options but they are £500+

I saw a gt3 at Silverstone the other month with very loose fitting plastic which looked fine. Not sure what it was though.

You can get a cheap "Trackday" version of the Xpel vinyl that you fit yourself. I was given some by my installer as he could not fit my car in before I had a trackday booked. Dont get me wrong it looked utterly shocking but it did the job and he took it off when he replaced it with proper Xpel. Have a google about.......

Cheapest chip protection is wide masking tape.
Looks horrid but the OCD concours participants plaster their cars with it before driving home.

Doesn’t the masking tape damage the pain when taken off? Are we talking ductape?

Half an hour and a roll of duct tape £3.99 from Screwfix will do it.
Won't look pretty though - but track days are for driving and the day will be much more enjoyable knowing that the peppering the car will be getting shouldn't be doing damage.

If the appropriate protective tape is applied to a clean well polished surface & the paint is in an acceptable condition, the removal of the tape after say 12- 24hrs shouldn’t in my experience lead to paintwork issues (a bit like applying graphics for events such as Le Mans).

Masking tape ,the type used when painting, shouldn't be damaging paintwork ,seeing as it's sole purpose is to

be put onto stuff you don't want overspray on.

I've never found chipping of the paint to be an issue on track days. The track surface is much cleaner than a road so you're less likely to be peppered by stones unless you're unfortunate to take a trip through a gravel trap or worse, get behind a car that has just come out of one (a friend suffered a cracked windscreen in such an incident). Rubber streaks collected on the track are of course an issue but are easily removed with some resin polish.
