Thanks very much for the info. I suspected as much, but wasn't sure. Trouble is, it idles and the fans are not coming on when the car gets really hot. My mechanic is trying to install a sealant to fix an evaporator leak (and I have had success with this sealant on other vehicles) and the car has to idle for about 30 minutes in the installation procedure.
Any suggestions? I'll have him try turning the AC on while he does this to see if the fans turn on.

Yeah, if the fans don't come on with the AC, then you have a fan/electrical issue. I don't know if your car is different, but on my car (89 non-SE) the fans will come on with the thermostat switched "on" but not all the way to where the compressor kicks in. In other words, the fan works off the AC on/off and is not tied to the compressor clutch.
