Hi currently in a V12 Vantage but want a car I can use rather than be a garage queen. So time to move out the Aston and the GTS is high up on the list for the next car. I've heard the 991.2 GTS is the ultimate daily? I have driven one at a Porsche experience day and was blown away with the performance.

What's it like as a daily even though it's lowered- is the ride too harsh? Too much tyre noise?

I have owned a 996 Turbo S before and I know it was before PASM but the ride was way too harsh.

Thanks in advance guys....

Mines a weekend car and I’m in love with it. However, the road noise makes the Bose stereo I specc’d a waste of money, if I’m honest. Certainly wouldn’t spec an audio upgrade again. I use a Macan GTS as a daily and that’s a joy in terms of comfort, as well as having some poke. The 991.2 GTS has PDCC and is 20mm lower, not sure if that increases road noise?

Problem of all 911s road noise. Especially on British motorway tarmac which is beyond useless.

My GT3 also has Bose.. and is indeed a waste of money. The standard sound system would be more than up to the task given all the racket the tyres make.

That said you can still use the car it does not make it unusable. GTS and vanilla 911 are much better than GT cars to be used daily.

992 should be an improvement in that respect too..

Anyone tried to address this road noise issue. I’ve wondered about taking back seats and carpets out of my 997TT and seeing if some panels could be covered with Dynamat (i think it is) or similar.

Thanks for the replies chaps, that's really useful. Interesting about the road noise, I suspect that is because of tyre width ever increasing on these cars. I personally have always found BOSE sound systems in Porsche cars a little bit dull compared to when it is installed in other car makes.

I use my GTS C2 PDK as a daily and have effectively for two years, having said that with not too much town driving. On poor roads, the tyre noise can be pretty high, particularly on concrete surfaces. The Bose system is hugely improved on the 991.1 car, and I think generally pretty good. I have the standard seats and find them very comfortable. I have found it a great car and can thoroughly recommend it as a daily.

I’m struggling to understand this noise issue everyone is talking about here.

I have owned the car for a year now, it’s my only car do a daily, and I have never once thought it sounded loud from tyre noise.

I have the cab too which is down 8 months of the year and even with that down I never notice the road noise, espevially not compared to BMWs I’ve been in with run flats!

I also love the Bose, whuch can fill the cabin even with the roof down and driving at motorway speeds.

I honestly can’t the think of a better daily driver though, I do have lift, which I use multiple times daily, so wouldn’t have one without that personally, if it’s a daily, oh and RWS is also a must have imo on a RWD.

It is very fast as you say, and I can’t see me not going for the 992 GTS at this point next.

Agree with Davidkn here. I've owned a number of 911s, though nothing in the 991-range (yet!), and the tyre noise on my BMW 440 with run flats is borderline intolerable on certain road surfaces. It makes a bit of a mockery of its DD-allrounder remit. Should have saved myself a small fortune in depreciation and bought myself a GTS!

I bought the 2013 V12 6 speed manual with very low mileage (now only on 9800 miles) and at that time prices were going up and I decided to try and keep the mileage low and used it sparingly as a third car hoping it would appreciate as a modern classic. Probably stupid idea in hindsight as prices are dropping now and cars are to be driven really and life is short!

Interesting helpful comments from you guys- thinking I will be pulling the trigger on the GTS- thing is I have to sell or probably more likely take a hit on the V12 with a p/ex from a dealer.

991.2 GTS is a great car and can easily be used daily. However if road noise and suspension compliancy are absolutely top of your agenda drive a 992. Easily as quick - if not quicker - but more compliant.

I test drove a 992 this week and the car felt quicker at the low end, less turbo lag, but certainly no faster overall, and the suspension felt the same, but then mine is a GTS cab so I don’t have the -20mm suspension, only the -10mm, so I’ve never felt it being too hard on roads.

The 992 didn’t make me want to give up the GTS though, I was very happy to get back in it, I would also (personally) never buy the first iteration of a model, I always go for the swan song model, once they’ve ironed out the issues and improved it somewhat.

Personally I think the 992 is a little quicker overall, but that may be down to the quicker lower end and less turbo lag. I think Porsche are quoting around 3.4 seconds 0-60 on the 992 which is a touch more than the 991.2GTS.

I would agree with not buying the first iteration, but it was hard to resist getting the first car out of my dealership. Overall it’s pretty well screwed together and no worse than any other Porsche I’ve had, but it has got a couple of software glitches that Porsche have been ironing out this week. Overall, whilst heavily revised, a 911 is an evolution so tbh I wouldn’t expect it to be as bad as say a new model Aston. Well fingers crossed and time will tell!

I also agree with Re road noise...I had a 991.2 GTS C2 coupe, it was on Pirelli Pzeros and the -10mm PASM chassis. I ran it on the lower comfort pressures, and road/tyre noise was never an issue for me. I swapped it for a Carrera T, which came on Michelin Pilot 4S tyres, and I felt it was fractionally better in both wet and dry, and maybe slightly quieter (I didn’t run them back to back)

I’m now in a 992C2S, again on -10mm chassis, and RWS. Road comfort is better, and road noise slightly lower again than the Carrera T.

Thanks again guys all your comments- are really helpful. I guess the 992 is somewhat slightly moved on from the 991.2 as one would expect it to be but in my eyes at the moment I just love the way the 991.2 GTS looks- the way it's stance on the road looks- not that the 992 is ugly- I'm just becoming obsessed with the 991.2GTS, especially having experienced it with the driving day at Porsche.

There’s a good chance that running with the -20mm suspension with the higher tyre pressures could be a totally different experience, I too have only had -10mm with the comfort tyre pressures.

I had a boxster GTS before with PASM and tried the X73 -20mm fixed sports suspension and it was way too crashy for me on UK roads, would be perfect for the track, but not as an every day driver. It also made the steering at parking speeds very heavy.

The GTS cab doesn’t have the option of the -20mm supension, but even if it did, I wouldn’t have gone for it personally.

It is a thing of beauty and with the lower suspension I think it looks even better. My intention was always to use my as a weekend car though, but I pretty sure, even with the road noise, I’d love driving it every day.

I did over 200 miles in it yesterday, and had a permanent smile on my face the whole time. I wouldn’t let what we’ve posted about road noise put you off, you can still hear the radio/ music fine. My point was more about not being able to tell the difference between that and the standard audio, because the quality is negated somewhat by the road noise. Having said that, I’m sure Bose might help with resale.

Now that the 992 is in the hands of the public its fair to say almost everyone says its quick, planted and offers new tech. What appears to be observable is the exhaust and engine noise are less "engaging". Less engaging to what is a fair question. The 992 has the same engine and power output as the outgoing 991.2 GTS. Its performance figures are very close as to be almost identical. It wouldn't be a forum if I didn't mention that the pre particulate filter GPF 991.2 GTS provides max torque from 2,150 to 5,000 , it also makes 550nm of torque in that band. Whereas the new 992 all have a narrower max torque band from 2,300 to 5,000 and make 20 torques less at 530max.

The post GPF 991.2 GTS models (so late 2018 early 2019) offer the same torque as the pre GPF GTS engine but peak torque isnt available till 2,3500 rpm. That's a shame.

I think the new 992 is great in many ways, IMHO I think the audible pleasure and engine engagment in the pre GPF cars is better. Almost everyone says the 991.2 GTS pre GPF cars were a real step up from the C2 and C4S 991. Porsche has had to compromise in the engine and exhaust on the new 992 relaltive the 991.2 GTS. Max torque is less and available higher in the rev band as a result of emission rules and getting thorugh them. IF they did not exist the 992 would sound better and provide more torque and lower down. After all wasnt that the advantage of the move to turbo vs N/A, more torque lower.

If I was getting a 992 I would pick PSE. As it is I enjoy the 991.2 GTS currently and after 5,000+ miles the sound gets better and better.

Hi OP

I have had my 991.2 C2 manual GTS since new last March. I bought it as a practical’ish weekend toy.

It’s now got 4000+ miles on it has loosened up nicely and sounds better than it did when brand new too. The manual is ok if you shift quickly not lazily, it’s ease to go from 7 to 4th instead of 6th as they are very close together.

The car would be great as a daily driver but isn’t great as a weekend toy in fact it doesn’t measure up against my 987.2 Boxster Spyder so I have just done a deal to swap it for a 997.2 GT3.

My wife thinks I am mad and may be so... it’s been suggested before.

Time will tell if it’s a good decision but if I were you don’t buy with your eyes give one a good test drive and make sure it’s for you.

Cheers
Ed
