My wife has been saving for a nice coupe for the spring/summer and is now ready to buy. The M2 is perfect for her as the size is right and the engine more than powerful enough for what she wants. But the newer version seems to have a slightly de-tuned M4 engine if i have read it right with 2 turbos whereas the first M2, or normal M2 shall we say, has 1.
An early but low mileage M2 is now available near us for sensible money. Is the later car with 2 turbos really worth the extra? Are the characters of the engines any different due to the second puffer?

They are different engines. The M2 Competition uses the engine from the M3/M4 and can be massively tuned with a change of the turbos.

The older M2 I believe is more difficult to get big power from. There are also various changes to the chassis and the M2C gets sporty seats finally rather than the pretty lame efforts in the M2.

Whether or not you think that lot and the fact that it is a much newer car is worth £20k extra is down to you.

I’ve got an M2 Comp (two turbos) which I love. I never considered the M2 when it came out as the engine was already ‘old’ and not a proper M engine. But it’s a lot cheaper and your wife might be quite happy. There’s lots about whereas with the M2C you’d probably have to go new.

I don't doubt the M2 is a great car, but for me I've never got on with the N55 in its other forms. eg. 335i, M Lites (1 and 2) plus the seats are more ordinary and don't have lumbar support as standard, plus it didn't feel to special to sit in compared to my old M3, the M4 and the M2 competition. It maybe just the seats, or maybe the interior as a whole ?

Taking only BMW AUC as a benchmark there's £13k between the lowest M2 @£32k and lowest M2 Competition (actually the one I've sat in as it's local) and I'd say the difference is worth it to have a better spec, a real M engine and decent seats which may be the main reason for it feeling more special to sit in. If not add better interior to that, plus all the other cost benefits of the car being newer, warranty, lower miles et al.
