Hatchback spanking
Discussion
Morning one and all sorry about the click bait title.
So couple days ago im driving home after yet another fruitless search for a replacement car. My knackered but trusty Polo 1.2S (64bhp of throbbing ponies) is not at its best having covered nearly 170,000mls. The steering is shall we say interesting where coming on and off the throttle produces a slight change in direction. I however had taken some brave pills and wrung its little neck across the tops (A537) from Buxton to Macclesfield and I was surprised just how much I enjoyed it. It was during this epic battle of man & machine that I had a bit of an epiphany as it made me realise that what I really want is a cheap maybe hottish hatchback that I can spank and not give two hoots about. However knowing me it will be loved eventually..
So ladies & gents im afraid this is a very thinly disguised what car post but I have tried to add in the tiniest dollop of action & danger in order to elicit some response from the good people of this here forum.
I have the princely sum of 1k possibly rising to the dizzying heights of 1.5k if I add what I can get for my knackered Polo. So im thinking of a Citroen C2 GT/VTS/Code or some kind of Renault shaped Clio.
What do you think folks ?

I think if you like thrashing cars they don't come much more reliable than the Suzuki Swift. French stuff from the early 2000s is just...meh. Unless you can get into 172/182 (I suspect examples will be ropey at this price point though)
Could you get into an Ignis Sport?
When I say spank im more of a mild buffering tinging on a hard tickling type of bloke. An Ignis sport would be delightful I feel but rare in these parts.Could you get into an Ignis Sport?
I ran a 206 gti180 for a while as a virtually disposable fast road thrash car, and it rocked. 35mpg 0-60 8sec. Having said that the stock headlights were woefully bad, so it got some aftermarket clusters on it pretty soon, then those in turn got hid kits on them, then it was awesome, so awesome I kept it.
I was quite surprised to find this under your enhanced budget

I find the sheer number of exclamation marks used in that ad objectionable.http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2019...

Very much appreciate the keen responses, some cars I had not thought of. Oxford is a bit of a blat away for that Swift sport but shows there are some bargains about. Not had a pug for a long time but my past experiences were good having had a 205 GTi and a 306 but I sat in a 206 16v sport with only 60 odd thousand miles. I can only describe the gearshift movement as being not too dissimilar to waggling a stick in a pot of jam or porridge.
I'm going to buck the trend a bit here - how about a boggo Megane 2.0 petrol.
Plenty fast enough, and a surprising chassis. I have a really really old 1.6 I bought for £90 and a seized engine, but after replacing the engine, and bits on the suspension, I'm constantly surprised at how bloody competent it is.

You won't need the hottest hatch to have fun with from what you describe a cooking version will fulfill your requirements.

The gear change on a gti180 is completely different from a normal 206. Its actually a thing of beauty, very tactile, comes as standard with an alloy gear knob, and reworked linkages taking out the slack in the mechanicm and reducing its throw somewhat. It is effectively factory fit shortshifter. And the seats, alcantara buckets, yum.

Funnily enough I was looking at the 3dr 'shakin that ass' Meganes in 1.6 and 2.0 and thinking they could be a bit of fun. Certainly a bit stiffer in 3dr form. Plenty fast enough, and a surprising chassis.
