Alright guys,

So I recently sold my r-tech stage 2+ edition 30 golf and I’m now looking for a replacement. My budget ideally would be £25k, however I could spend up to £35k tops.

I don’t have a partner, kids etc so having lots of space in it isn’t a necessity, but I do actually quite like estates, so I am open to them. I have a history of owning hot hatches (Leon Cupra 290, 2x Golf GTi Edition 30 and an M140i) so I’m looking to get away from that really.

My edition 30 was beginning to show signs of rust which was something I didn’t want to get into sorting, so ideally my next car would be 2010 or newer and probably sub 60k miles.

I quite like the idea of owning a V8 while it’s still somewhat socially acceptable, before all the electric cars come in! Naturally something reliable and *reasonable* running costs (I realise a V8 is never really going to be cheap to run). Open to V6 also.

So yeah, I’m looking towards the Pistonheads community for some ideas or recommendations for my next car! Some thoughts of mine listed below:

B8 RS4 Avant
B8 S4 Avant (which would then be modified)
XFR (concerned about reliability)
C63
E92 M3

Watching with interest as I had a thread going about M140i vs. A35 (both around £35k mark) but thinking I might see a suggestion in here to make me re-think my approach to my next motor wink

Check out TRL and you can get the M140i significantly cheaper. Mine was just under 40k list down to 32k, 1k deposit and 36 month PCP.

For me the E-class seems a little dated, but i’ll look further into the face lifted one. I will have to go take a look at the mustang, but fear it may seem a little ‘cheap’ inside. The Lexus is a little out there for me, I tend to prefer cars that have been a little more understated. After having the M140i the M2/M4 have always seemed quite similar, although I appreciate they are the S55 and not the B58 engine, I also think they don’t sound as good as competitors (personal opinion). The Evora I feel might be too stripped out for my taste. Thanks for all your suggestions, as above I’ll look further into the E-class and mustang!

Have read about mammoth running costs with the likes of 1500 quid on front discs and pads. It scared me away from them somewhat haha.

Wow M4's have really dropped in price. I wonder if the running costs means they're within my budget now.

I completely agree about the Mustang being cheap inside, this and the Alfa Quadrofolio were such a let down for interior, the Alfa was so plasticky

315hp Audi A6 BiTdi ?

AllRoad Guess for the air supension / practicals, or staight avant.

You'll get in a 2016 model and they go like the clappers. Q car stuff.

The Lexus isn't out there I'd say test drive one if anything looks wise I'd say they're a bit anonymous most people looking at one wouldn't expect that it houses a 5.0 V8, when you drive one you may find it gets under your skin.

The Evora may be a bit basic but it'll daily with ease the interiors are nice, the Mustang interiors are nicer than people think when I've sat people in them the interior becomes much less of an issue than they expected it to be.

I agree the M4's don't sound that good even an Akrapovic on my M3 didn't make enough of a difference.

There is one car that I forgot that'll daily with ease, it also a great drivers car out of the box but it also has the potential for tuning to make it more individual.

370Z Nismo I prefer the Gen1 as it's a bit more raw & looks more aggressive, the Gen2 is a bit less in your face & has more sound deadening.

Looking at the hot hatches you've owned.

You might think you're bored of hot hatches, but you may also miss their sharpness, and their unfussed way of covering ground very quickly.

Some of the bigger cars might just feel like powerful barges in comparison.

Add in the higher running costs, fuel, tyres, repairs etc...

I've just sold my RCF and gone back to a lightweight car with a fraction of the power.

I move cars around for a few local dealers, I'm always excited when I'm sent to get something big and powerful.

But after driving them for a few hours I usually think if I've got to have one car to use as a daily it's be something like a sharp Golf, Civic R, even an Audi TT dare I say it.

Ever wondered why large engined cars often have multiple owners?

Anyhow, I've said it now. I'm sure you need to scratch that itch so have fun.

I was wondering.

It doesn't have Alpina badge on the steering wheel, or on the front air dam.

Surely Alpina aren't allowing copies?

You're right.

That's madness if you can order that from BMW, it's just devaluing the Alpina badge like the M badge has been slowly added to just about any BMW

Forget that car OP, it's not a proper Alpina

In what way do you think an evora is stripped out? It's extremely comfortable.

So just to update this... I decided that I was best lowering the budget to £25k firm as not to stretch myself in anyway financially.

A C63 AMG Coupe went up for sale at a garage that’s I trust not too far away so I went down to have a look and a test drive and loved it! That engine is unbelievable! It’s got all the toys for a car of that age too so I’m really happy with my purchase.
