AA low loader. Max distance they will take car?

Im having difficulty in getting the AA to take my car to APM approx 30 miles away.
They are basically insisting AA approved garage or "local" dealer of my choice, however if they find a dealer more local then they will take it there, or it is at my own expense.
Whilst there are other dealers around, non of them are particulary close, Racing Green probably the closest but only by a few miles maybe 5 or so.
Already talked to APM and Andy can take the car in tomorrow and do the work. Anywhere else I could have to leave it there and wait an extended period of time for it.
Also, if it goes to anyone like Racing Green, as I have been informed, they are the upper end of the scale cost wise. So the AA are basically telling me to spend more money on the repairs. (This is for a slave cylinder issue, no clutch at present)
However, if I was out on the road when it happened, as it actually did, but I managed to limp home, they would have taken it anywhere I asked. I just dont get it.
Being late on a Saturday afternoon when it happened, there wouldnt have been anywhere to take it anyway, that would have been open, so it was best to get it home IMO.
The AA is not bloody cheap either, £190 per annum, and they won't get the car to who I can trust to do a good job, cos its maybe 5-10 or so miles further than another dealer.
Anyway, I have challenged them to come up with a who they think they are taking it too. And we'll see what happens, frustrating though.
Anyone else had this issue with them? What was the outcome?

do you know what we are entitled to with AA relay my car is stuck 30 miles from home after a windscreen change an electrical fault apeared ,the RAC screen fitters called an RAC man who diagnose the fault to a short circuit to earth on the starter motor ignition lead but could not fix it ,they rang the local TVR dealer who said he could not look at it for a month and on monday they are getting a guy from the local Lucas agent to have a look, I am going through on monday and if he cannot sort it ,and I dont think he will without a lift ,I intend to call out the AA and ask them to relay it home for me ,should I expect any problem with that ,sorry if this looks like a hijack but your post has spot on timing for my problem and its got me thinking I may have a problem best regards and good luck Steve.

Well it's uncanny. I logged onto post exactly the same question. I've got the AA home Start Relay thing.
I've just driven home and thought the clutch seemd to be right at the bottom. I got my car reversed onto drive, moved it forward a bit to straighten up and when I put it back into reverse the clutch pedal just stuck down. I give it a tap and now it is just swinging away doing nothing!! I'm a bit pissed off as I had it into SFR last week. The clutch was down to the last inch and I could hardly get it into 1st. Shane said he couldn't find a leak and topped up the fluid again. I'd had the same problem about 6 months ago and topping up the fluid solved it, but apparently not this time!!
Anway, I'm rambling - back to the point. I live in Bolton - will the AA take my car to SFR in Stockport approx 30 miles? I think the closest Authorised dealer is in Ashton in Makerfield which is about 20 miles?

When my damper snapped and a local company authorised by the AA, (not an AA lorry) took me home. It was a Sunday night but he told me then, he'd take me anywhere.
IIRC you can only use Relay if your vehicle is further than ¼ mile from home.
If it's not then push it round the corner, that's what I would do.

I think the AA generally say they will low-load it to a garage a maximum of 15 miles away, that's if you call them out under home start.
That's okay for your Ford Mondeo et al, as every town has a Ford garage. The problem we have is quite often we live over 15 miles from our dealer.
Shouldn't be a problem with that, but remember if you breakdown away from home you can have it relayed to your home or to a garage. You cannot have it relayed home, and then at a later point relayed to a garage.

Braddy, same prob I have then, exactly what happened to me!!
If I put some fluid in, will it give me a driveable car so I can get it there myself? Most of the distance is on the A3, so if I took fluid and it happens en route, is it just a case of topping up? Surely it needs bleeding too?
Pay the AA for their help, they arent being very helpful to me right now!! In limbo waiting for their call which probably wont happen.

I have AA cover, when my clutch went at home the AA would only take the car to the nearest main dealer, which at the time was not my first choice, they would take the car to my prefered dealer but at my cos, that being several hundred pounds. But after some complaining to the dealer they came and collected the car free of charge.
Neilus, I'm gonna ring Shane up tomorrow (SFR) and see what he says about clutch. I'm not a tech/mechanically minded person. I don't want to get into a 'bleeding' situation. Hopefully he'll say that just pouring some clutch fluid in will get the car part way there. altho I think if it's a seal that's gone I'm not sure it will work :-(

Im not with AA but i had a recent thing with Green Flag, where i had to cough up 130 good ones just to get it low loaded to the nearest TVR garage to my parents house, as it broke down there over xmas. I checked their policy, and they have reworded it - it used to say 'to a suitable repairer in the vicinity' but this has now gone from the small print -anything outside of 15 miles and you have to cough up! Makes me worry about going on a nice weekend away into the middle of nowhere!
When my slave went I bled it and it got me home from Glasgow to Leeds. I then bled it again to get me to the nearest place that could do the job asap (about another 20 miles).
You can see the bleed nipple at the back of the drivers side airbox on the end of a bit of hose. Looks like it's braided but might just be for effect!!
Anyway. Takes a few minutes and should be enough to get you 30 miles depending on how far gone it is.

Well, here it goes, just called the AA and they have said the job is down and they are low loading it tomorrow morning to APM.
They understood its not your typical car, and are hauling it off to where I asked for it to go.
The difference between there and anywhere else is bugger all really.
Only thing is, I got the AA parts and labour repair insurance, looks like they need to send someone out to see the car first for me to make a claim. I'll try get them to get someone along to APM tomorrow APM, can just be one of their call out guys. Then the repair shouldnt cost me as it covers "clutch" and various other parts!!

I just put my Cerbera on it two weeks ago. so I think you can still get TVRs on it. BUT I think it might be worth trying an indirect route ! ie buy it for £52 for the wifes car. A week later call and say you want to move it to your new car (ie the TVR).

Regarding the Clutch issues.
When my slave went I showed no signs from the outside, there was no fluid on the underside of the car, it was only when we opened the master cylinder that we founds black seal deposits in the fluid. ( A sure sign that the seals are breaking down )
The best way to 'set a few more miles' from the clutch is to reverse bleed it, if you can. You need to apply a pressure feed to the bleed line and wait for the bubbles to come up on the master cylinder. This will stop the old bits of seal from being pushed into the slave cylinder.
You will find the fluid when you crack open the bell housing, I got covered when I changed my seals. If you have a ramp you can do this job in a matter of hours, I bet it could be done in 3.5 if you really work hard and have all the bits to hand.
One thing I will say only use the seals from Joolz, he is the only supplier that used the uprated material. Also if you are in Essex and want to have a go at it yourself give me a call, don’t mind helping out.
