Sounds like a timing chain problem, not uncommon on these. This sounds similar to yours.

Is there any way to check before bringing the car to a garage which would charge a fortune to replace it

What about a Bering on the alternator or steering pump?

Could I remove the serpentine belt and start the engine to see if the noise come from an auxiliary component?

you could try that.

Or you could also just drive it until something fails.

Does not sound a good idea to get something fail.
