So in my late 20's I started getting a few whisps of silver (dark brown otherwise). By mid 30's it was sides and a few streaks, now late 40's I am "silver" all over.
Wet the hair and add some product and its darker with silver streaks which to me I am comfortable with... yes I know its just vanity.
Is this it or anything else to darken things down a little?

You only have one option if you want to do things properly and that's dye it, either at home or at a salon etc. You will get a new hole ripped on ph for even contemplating this, not popular here. Despite what some think, the newer stuff is very good, and works well. I'm 29 and I have a streak similar to Pepe le pew's and silver on the sides coming through when my hair grows.
I get a half back and sides which sorts them out for a couple of weeks but it is the sliver or silver on the top that is distinctive if you think of my hair cut similar to a shorter Zac Efron's faux hawk.
Have thought about dying it. Might give it a try sometime. My barber did suggest it a few weeks ago and he is mid 20's.

Embrace the grey!
I'm blonde but have been going whiter on the sides for some years.... when I get my haircut, and it's usually fairly short anyway, my hairdresser knows it's #1 or #2 clippered on the sides .
I think as hair turnes grey your skin tone changes too, so coloouring hair often means a mismatch vs. skin tone.
(There's a guy at work who wishes he was still early 30s, but he's more mid-late 50s, and his dyed black hair looks almost purple in the office lights. NOT GOOD!)

Blokes colouring their hair, so obvious to everyone except the bloke using the dye. There's nothing undignified about going grey, there's something a bit desperate about trying to halt the inevitable. The unnatural shades, the roots coming in if its not done often enough, it's not a good look.
One of my friends started going grey on the sides in his mid twenties, he used to get his girlfriend to pluck the greys out every night with tweezers. He had to stop once his hair was noticably thin in the back and sides where the grey patches had been plucked away.

Combination brown/copper coloured Barnet here, which began whitening
during my early 30s. Grey as a badger (or a badger's tadger) now and couldn't care less.
Like most, I've a one-age hairstyle (70s long) but I can produce a white beard and 'tache now.
My mate calls ne Catweazle now but he's wrong, I've a goatee, not a Van Dyke.

I've managed to skip grey and go straight to white which isn't that great a look 
Currently I'd say less than 5% of my hair is white but it's quite noticeable as the rest of my hair is dark brown.
I'm tempted to dye it but as the white hairs seem randomly placed and not just on th e sides I'd have to dye all my hair, in my mid thirties so to be expected I guess.

I’ve got 3 months of paternity leave coming up, and as I won’t be in work to get the piss ripped out of me, I’m thinking about dying my now very grey hair back to something more original.
What’s the best way of doing it? One of those shampoos that does it gradually sounds appealing. Is anyone on here up for posting real before and after photos?

That's what grey hair is, white mixed in with the normal colour, not literally grey hairs. Or so my hairdresser ex told me anyway.Currently I'd say less than 5% of my hair is white but it's quite noticeable as the rest of my hair is dark brown.

Either way dying it is tragic imo. I know a couple of guys who do, and I know they do because it looks unnatural and pretty ridiculous. I'm embracing the silver fox look myself.

That shampoo doesn't work, I'm amazed they're allowed to advertise it. Don't waste your money. If you are going to do it, you want the old style plain jfm in a box, just that. If your actual hair colour pre gray is close to the dye colour then it will be better, the closer the better. Chuck the disposable gloves they give you away get some nitrile ones. Mix, comb in carefully, wipe any bits immediately of the skin with a damp microfibre cloth, leave 5 minutes, rinse out. Done. What’s the best way of doing it? The shampoo didn't work for me either. Absolutely no difference to my hair colour by the time I had finished the bottle ! Just For Men works well and I used it for many years, but have given up now and am just letting nature take its course especially as my bald spot is getting bigger and it was a case of chucking good money after bad :-(
