New Campervan conversions

Weve had a few threads over the years but none for a while so here goes.
Anyone done a conversion recently? What van base did you use and why. Layout, problems etc.
We owned a caravan for a few years and thats now gone, we have just returned from NZ were we had a small van for 2 months and thought, yeh why not, BUT the Hiace was way too small. So we thought about either buying one that someone has to sell, or convert ourselves. Have watched a Youtoob series with a guy converting a Merc sprinter and it was great. We are thinking of having a small side garage for a small 125 to pootle around on instead of having to put everything away to travel. (That was the main reason we had a caravan). That and a decent sized bed. Thinking of a small garage as hanging 120 kg off the back doesn't seem a great idea...........(or is it).
Appreciate your thoughts. Costs, we can stretch up to 15k for everything. Build or buy
