XK 4.2 or 5.0?

Looking to upgrade from my much loved 95 XJ Sovereign.
Ive driven an XK, 07 4.2 on 18" alloys, very nice, fast enough and comfortable (not sure if it had CATS or not), my only gripe was some of the interior plastics. Thinking I may be better off with a 5.0L portfolio as it gives me the power of the 4.2 XKR without the discomfort, and the interior quality is improved. Ive seen a few 08 and 09 Portfolios for 13k, anything I need to watch out for with the 5.0L vs the older 4.2?
A friend of mine mentioned that the 5.0 have cooling issues and that's why he bought a 4.2 XKR instead. My issue is with carbon buildup due to the 5.0L being direct injection.
