PCP Handback Arrangements

Looking for some help on handing back PCP cars. We have two that we got in June 2016 on 3 year deals but are getting different messages from the different finance companies.

• My Mercedes was delivered on 21st June 2016 and Mercedes have said that if I don't want the balloon payment then it need collecting on or before 21st June 2019 - that makes perfect sense to me as it's exactly three years after delivery and I'm happy with this.
• My wife's Nissan was collected from the dealership on 8th June 2016. Nissan have said that if she doesn't want to pay the balloon payment then it needs collecting on 11th July 2019 (or the balloon needs paying that day). I'm not sure why payments weren't on 8th of the month. So this is 37 months and a few days after we got it, which makes no sense to me.

We are trying to arrange to hand back the Nissan at least a few days before the 3 year anniversary so we're not responsible for putting it through the MOT but Nissan have said to my wife that it can only go back early through Voluntary Termination. Otherwise we have to sort out the MOT on it for 8th June.

Are Nissan right in saying we should have the car for 37 months on a 3 year deal? Does anyone have any experience handing back a PCP slightly early with them (RCI Financial Services)? What do I need to say to them?!

We also have the issue that I think we've missed a service on the Nissan. We've only done 21,000 miles but have had it nearly 3 years and only done 1 service. The local garage haven't been at all proactive in reminding us or trying to get us booked in and the car doesn't remind you (not like the Merc!). Nissan have told us it's a flat fee of £175 if we haven't stuck to maintenance schedule. Does this sound right? It's cheaper than servicing it if so!

Maybe a clever/sneaky way for Nissan to get freshly MOT'd cars returned - 'sure, have an extra month on us, make sure it's legal on the day we collect... cheers!'

You've PCP'd a new Nissan but are worried about stumping up £35 for an MOT?

I VT'd a car and ended up having to pay £40 to extend the insurance. It's not a massive amount in the big scheme of things. I think I lost £11 in tax because of a month boundary too.

Happy to pay for a MOT as long as it doesn't need a load of work! This is the whole reason we've gone for a 3 year PCP - so we are covered by new car warranty and not needing MOT work.

I think the days of cars needing a load of work at their first MOT is over now. Would be surprised if it didn't pass first time.

Another factor is that our replacement for the Nissan will be ready at the start of June so we don't need it beyond then.

If the new one is ready early just take the old on in for part exchange, provided the old one is worth more than the balloon.

Old one isn't worth more, and the new one is a lease, so can't PX!

just look at your paperwork. My Audi was actually a 37 month deal, presumably to ensure that the car was mot'd on return.

I’ve seen a few pcp deals now where there is the deposit plus 37 payments.

I expect they got fed up with having to mot cars that were handed back.

If you are that worried and are just returning it why not just VT it?

Stick it in for an MOT early, in the unlikely event it fails you'll hopefully be covered under the manufacturers warranty?
