We had a 2012 118d auto which was OK.
Electrical problems only spoiled the ownership of 4 years , like Auto wipers , Air Con had a mind of its own would be blowing cold air when it was switched off , Faulty rear electric window, boot light staying on even though boot was closed.
MPG was around high 40s .
You can check the service history on the i Drive , 2 year service or approx 18000 mile service intervals.
Annual Oil change would be a bonus though.

I've only ever driven F20s as Courtesy Cars.
Had a 114d, 116d and 118i and I liked the 118i the best. Plus it was showing high 30s mpg on the OBC, so probably not much less economical than the diesels in real world conditions and more likely to be ULEZ compliant (if that matters).
And I think a 2014 116d will still have the N47 engine which has suffered from cam-chain issues, but maybe they were sorted by then?
Still that's why I bailed out of my E87 123d at 80k miles - which did me a favour anyway as I discovered N/A straight 6 BMWs.
Might be worth some research first.

We have a 63 plate 116d Efficient Dynamic which we bought 2 1/2 years ago with 28k miles on the clock and it's now up to 84k.
We've had no issues with it, just general servicing, but do be aware of the EGR recall, we lost ours for 5 weeks (stuck at our local dealer whilst awaiting parts), so make sure any car you're looking at has already been recalled, else your son will be losing it soon after buying it!
Being an ED, ours is zero road tax and returns anywhere between 60-70 mpg on my 106 mile daily commute. It's not fast and our's isn't that well spec'd but it does the job we bought it for, which is to not cost a huge amount in drive us in relative comfort.
If your son is not going to massive mileage, say below 12,000 miles a year then he would be better off with a petrol equivalent as others have said, as the dealer only advised us to go for a diesel due the mileage we do.

My diesel won't be going anywhere anytime soon, I don't need to travel to LDN by car or any city of that matter regularly, my Euro 5 318d will be fine for many years I'm sure.
Travel alot in Europe with my car, many cities over there require a emmisions badge, no biggey only a few euros, but city driving over there is an interesting experience anyway
