HPI only works if the cars that have been written off by an insurer, not those badly repaired in a backstreet garage and flogged to an unsuspecting punter.

Ermmm... There was a bit more to it than just a bent wheelShe quickly discovered one of the tyres needed pumping up twice a day and was warned by a friend who examined the car that it had been in a front end collision with parts held together by cable ties.
“She had been misled by the advert because the vehicle was in an unsafe and dangerous condition at the point of sale,” said Mr Lee Marlew, prosecuting on behalf of Wolverhampton Trading Standards Department.

It means that they can keep some semblance of dignity and haven't lost face completely. Shameful behaviour but many seem to indulge in it. k. Why wouldn't you put your hands up and say we messed up? The continued protestations of innocence (and particularly that dreadful video) from Fiona Onosanya are evidence of just the same thing I suspect.
