After spending two and a half hours this afternoon fitting an ACT inducton kit to my Griff 500(1994), i was unable to get the cover back over my new shiny air filter. I presume the cover is to stop hot air being drawn in from the engine bay - so will leaving it off cause any problems?
Also, do i need to get the fuel/air mixture adjusted?
And where is best place to get this done if needed.

It does make a lovely noise now as it sucks the air in !!

Thanks in advance.

Dont really need to make any adjustments....however would be good for engine if hot air introduction could be avoided, cold air denser. Struggled getting mine back on but twas eventually possible. You got cylidrical filter? Not end of world...

I was under the impression that the larger 5 litre TVR engines especially ran weak anyway, so on that basis you really should be budgeting about 800 pounds (or more if things like your injectors need cleaning / changing / etc which seems to be very very common on TVRs) for remapping afterwards.

It's my understanding that the air mass meter will compensate for increased airflow (as that's it's job) but if the engines run weak in std form adding more air isn't exactly going to improve that situation.

A rebuild on a 5 litre will be 3k pounds at least if it's broken, not cheap.

General rule is : if you do any engine mods you need to get the best out of it or you're not getting full value from the mod.

Cheers to both of you.
Dave I have a cylinder filter and will now be spending another two and a half hours next weekend trying to get the cover back on.

I did go for a run after fitting and she seemed to drive well, so hopefully no more adjustments.

Will go for a longer run after putting the cover back on.

I run without one and it doesn't seem to make any difference?
Once you are on the move i think enough air will be getting flowed through the nose.
I can imagine in a traffic jam it may make a difference?
but then you seldom require the extra 3bhp lost in that situation.

Hi Jonnyboy, thats quite a long time to be leaning into the nose of your car, i bet you called me a few choice words from what i can remember you shouldn't have to remove the cowel in order to replace the filter and pipe ?
With regard to re-mapping, tests that were carried out indicated that cars were OK without a re-map, especially as you aren't changing the charactoristics of the engine, say like new plenum system / porting cam change etc and the % increase in airflow is relatively small, the 500's do have a weak spot in the middle of the map but at higher RPM they tend to overfuel as standard.
Re-map is always a good idea though, and IMO good value as most cars are "out of tune" when they arrive at the RR.
