My 2 litre diesel canpervan suddenly list all power and blew out out a fair bit of dark smoke. My investigations have found nothing but it's making a strange noise. It's sucking in loads of air and making a thump-thump-thump sound as it's drawing in air. It's also putting out oil spots via the exhaust. Any ideas please?

At a guess turbo failure ?

Thanks Steven. That's what I'm drawn too but I'm just a bit confused about the noisy air intake. Is that something that a faulty turbo could do? I just can't think if anything that could create that sound.

Thanks Ally Bassman. All the pipes are intact. What's the turbo accuator?

a wastegate, it could be knackered causing the symptoms you describe.

Although, oil out of the exhaust does point to a pretty serious turbo issue.

Thanks again. I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and remove the turbo. It's not an easy job on my van as the manifold is very close to the bulkhead so ideally the engine needs to come out, but I think I might just get enough room if I undo the engine mounts and tip it forward a little.

Turns out my main problem is a broken valve rocker arm. I can't see any reason why it's broken as the valve is closing fine and it hasn't been hit by the piston as there are no marks on the crown. I've also confirmed the turbo has a little play in it so I have to replace that too.

Possibly a temperature related sticking valve? Or maybe there was a flaw in the casting.

Check boost pressure pipe carefully, it may have a split in it if its chucking out Black smoke.
Some times splits show up better when pipe is hot but may not open as readily when cold. Good luck.
