To buy some paint I went to my local emporium that sells everything anyone could want from lightweight tents to aircraft carrier anchors. They had a range of marine paint called Teamac. So I got 1 litre of undercoat - coverage 8 sq metres and 2 litres Gloss coverage 20 sq metres.

Things became interesting when I asked for etch primer. I was given a leaflet which says on old fibreglass, etch primer is not needed just a rub down with 200 or 300 paper and apply undercoat.

Has anyone with experience of painting their jeep any advice - will the paint take like this. I am intending to brush paint as I do not have a garage with power but I do know a person who is good at brush painting.

We have a vehicle that has been sprayed with 2 shades of paint without primer underneath, one is firmly stuck to the aged glassfibre. The other (thinner) colour is not so well attached and is peeling in places and we reckon to remove most of it in due course with the aid of a steam cleaner.
Not sure if this helps but the thicker layer looks like the business, no idea what sort of paint it is but it is nothing special by the look of it!

I guess that as it will be brush painted, this paint will be fairly thick. Also being marine paint it is for fibreglass, steel and wooden boats.

Although I am still nervous about not using an etch primer.

An update on professional advice.

Still worried about whether or not to apply paint without etch primer - I went into a local boat builders Cygnet Marine of Penryn.

I was told they would only rub down old fibreglass then apply the paint. He also said, the Marine Gloss, I have bought, will probably fade within a couple of years; and it would be better to spray paint using an epoxy 2 part paint such as one of the paints produced by West Paints.

Oh well in a couple of years time I'll treat the jeep to an epoxy respray, but for now the Marine Gloss will have to do.

Not sure about problems with repainting Marine Paint, I would think it would depend upon the composition of the paint.

The paints that require special thinners like Hammerite always pose problems. However this Teamac paint only requires White Spirit for brush cleaning and as thinners.

It is a case of suck it and see. Hopefully you will be able to see at Newark.

I have just come in after applying a coat of Smoothrite to the bumpers and Rollover Bars. Unfortunately the in places the plastic coating on the Roo Bar is peeling away - any ideas what I should do?

have done quite a bit of painting in the past if you come to repaint it at a later date you will have to strip it right back and etch prime it as all your modern paints will just react on the marine paint.

Thanks for the info Gaz.

I now know I shall have to stick with marine paint, as the jeep is never going to be a concours show winner, but everyday functional transport to suit me I can live with marine paint. The finish is not too bad.

Not painted yet.

At the moment Boris looks rather sad with no lights or bonnet.

For the last few days I have been busy with P40, P38, Fine body filler, Really Coarse 60 grit paper, Wet and Dry preparing to paint. Tonight after work I should be doing the last of the filling.

Tomorrow the undercoat will be going on. By the end of the weekend Boris should be fit to face the camera's lens.

Yes I used International marine finish over bare fibre glass without priming it first. As a second coat of paint tends to "pickle" the first my only options are to use primer or undercoat over the gloss then re-gloss OR strip it all off and do it properly with a primer or undercoat on the f/g then gloss.

I don't have anywhere to spray so it had to be brush painted. I'm also very impatient in my old age so time was of the essence although I did remove all of the trim and lights first... I'm afraid "good enough" rules increasingly these days. I'd rather be driving it.

Cheers
Ian

Like IanA I would rather be driving.

Unlike Ian although I am not priming according to the lit with the paint this is not necessarry, I am putting on an undercoat. I am using Teamac because it is a lot cheaper than International.

Once again like Ian I do not have any spraying facility, if I had I would probably used a West paint 2 pack epoxy, as this effectively creates a new gel coat and lasts a lot longer.

The colour on the tin is "Deep Bronze" - we shall see. Why Bronze? Because i am a cheapskate and it was 20% off - 'nough said.

At last the filling and rubbing down is completed so all being well tomorrow is undercoat day.

All being well by monday Boris will be transformed - lets hope the transformation looks better than sun / Tcut bleached Red.

The Buff undercoat is now on.

This looks very like the same colour as Afrika Korps vehicles in war films. Now I am wandering whether to go Bronze or shell out more money and put on Buff gloss - I'll sleep on that one. But tomorrow morning have to make a decision - do I really want it to look modern ie Bronze or like Rommels Staff Car?
