Was I scammed?

I just want some general feedback on an issue I'm having with a car dealer from informed individuals.

I bought a car that had a weird noise over 40MPH which I asked the dealer about. He said that the noise was normal for that vehicle and it wasn't an issue. A couple of months after I bought the car, the gearbox broke and the mechanic said that the noise I heard was obviously a gearbox issue and any car dealer would have known this.

He laughed when I said what the dealer told me about the noise which made me feel a bit stupid. The car dealer was very nice and I don't believe he'd have sold me the car knowing the gearbox was on its way out but that's what the mechanic has told me.

The car is a Nissan Qashqai and the seller said they all make a weird sound above 40 mph. Is that true?

I don’t know anything at all about Nissan Quashqai (sp?) but surely you must have asked yourself why any modern car would make a weird noise?

I’d place my money on your mechanic being right not the dealer!

I guess when you get the gearbox fixed it will give you your answer, but there’s noises and there’s noises, depends on the type of noise.

I would be on to the original dealer with this as it looks very much like dealer BS.
If you get gearbox fixed and the noise is gone then he doesn’t have a leg to stand on IMO.

Dealer could have been in full knowledge of the fault, or at least "a" fault & gave lip service to get you out the door in the hope that it didn't go bang within any warranty period that you may have had.......

Was the dealer franchised or independent & what sort of mileage was on the vehicle?

The noise could be wheel bearings, a common issue with Nissan Qashqai / X Trail - mine does it, though I'm not too bothered. If it is still under warranty, call your local Nissan dealer, as a regular car dealer or car supermarket won't have a clue, and could say all sorts of guff like it's been stood around for a while / give it a good drive and it will be okay etc... probably the main reason it ended up there, I think.

Are you sure it's not wheel bearings / balancing / tyres? Gearbox is a big ticket item, but I haven't heard of many just 'going'...

I tend to trust mechanics more than car salespersons. The later don't have a bad reputation for nothing and the majority are salesmen who like money way more than they like cars. So they will often say whatever to get or keep your money.

There are a few good ones. Quite a few on here but I bet many of them would admit they do or have worked with some right sts.

Sorry to hear about your troubles.

Is it an auto?

If it is, there is a known issue with these gearboxes, a simple Google throws up a lot more information.

Have you spoken to the dealer you got the car from?

Sorry but you bought a car with a noticeable noise which you were told is normal, so went ahead?

I have some magic noise making beans you can buy. I’m also very nice and never tell porkies to get shut of my noise making beans.

I think it’s safe to assume it was knackered when you bought it.

A lot of car sales people (not all I hasten to add) really know nothing at all about cars other than what the manufacturer tells them they need to know to sell them. Case in point a good mate of mine works for VW in car sales, has for years but I'm confident in saying he wouldn't know how to change a wheel never mind anything else, this is not uncommon.

I think you got typical sales person BS to get you off so they could move onto the next sale

Yep, I was amazed how how little Honda staff knew about their cars, even basic sales stuff like what each spec came with.

You can understand that to an extent with brands like BMW and Mercedes but Honda only sell four models in the UK, and even they're pretty limited in trim choices.
