So while back cured a hesitation problem in my TU3 engined Berlingo 1.4 by fitting a new coil pack.

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

Since then car ran fine but was getting a pre cat lambda sensor OBD code error. At MOT time car failed for carbon monoxide levels. No obvious air leaks.

So garage fitted new 02 sensor but car ran poorly as a result. (They also changed post cat sensor). They checked all associated wiring, cleaned ECU plugs and finally were able to code in new sensors and get emission test passed.

Car idling was still erratic but thought it would take a few miles driving to settle.

I've taken it for several drives over the last day and idling is poor (jumps around, occasionally stalls, seems to improve as engine temperature increases). On flip side when cruising or accelerating the car is noticeably nippier than before. confused

However, low speed idling still awful and it hunts all over the place. Then got the same pre MOT error code of 'O2 sensor insufficient voltage'.

Didn't feel safe driving it home when traffic was busier so unplugged the pre cat 02 and straight away the idling issue was resolved.

Short version, O2 sensor error. Car runs roughly with both old and new pre cat O2 sensors. No idling issues if disconnect sensor.

Could this be due to another sensor giving spurious readings? Or have I got an ECU error as result of previously bad coil pack which Google suggests is common issue?

Can't get it back to garage for a few days so intrigued at any suggestions from the PH massive.

lambda sensors are not coded in to anything.

Did they test/view the sensors behaviour before changing ?

Where they cheap generic parts, or good quality or OEM ?

And what exactly were the emissions readings ?

THANKS FOR COMMENTS, ANSWERS BELOW...

Lambda sensors are not coded in to anything.

COULD BE MY TERMINOLOGY, GIST IS THEY COULDN'T GET CAR TO RECOGNISE THE NEW SENSOR SO MESSED ABOUT WITH DIAGNOSTIC TOOL

Did they test/view the sensors behaviour before changing ?

LOOKED LIKE PREVIOUS OWNER HAD TRIED TO REMOVE BEFORE AS WAS BENT AND NUT ROUNDED OFF. I'D NOTED THIS ALREADY BEFORE GARAGE HAD IT. THEY HAD IT FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS TO LOOK AT.

Where they cheap generic parts, or good quality or OEM ?

THE LATTER

And what exactly were the emissions readings ?

I'LL DIG OUT PAPERWORK.

CLEARED FAULT CODES TODAY AND CAR RAN GREAT. PLUGGED IN O2 SENSOR AGAIN AND CAR CONTINUED TO RUN WELL. NO EML. THEN AFTER A COUPLE OF TRIPS EML RETURNED AND CAR IDLED POORLY, STALLING WHEN PULLING AWAY. REMOVED 02 SENSOR CONNECTOR AND IDLE ISSUES SORTED AGAIN ALTHOUGH CAR NOT AS RESPONSIVE ON THE MOVE.

SHOULD POINT OUT THAT I TRUST GARAGE WHO HAVE WORKED ON OTHER CARS FOR ME. JUST WONDERED IF ANYONE HAD AN BRIGHT IDEAS BEFORE IT GOES BACK TO THEM!

Removing a sensor is not testing it.

A bent/damaged sensor is likely fked.

Just because you trust the garage, does not mean they're competent.
