Owned my 2007 V8V for just over 2 months. Had it checked over by a specialist before I bought it. They mentioned a misting of oil on the timing chain cover but said it was only a misting and something they have seen on lots of cars. Called another specialist and they confirmed they see lots of cars like this, cleaned it off, year later on next service same thing - just a misting.

My car has 19.5k miles, 10 years of AM history and 2 of specialist and had a completely untouched (and a bit grubby) engine when I bought it. Which I liked as it showed it hadn't been cleaned to cover anything up.

Anyway, moved it out of the garage today to go for a drive after a couple of weeks of sitting there and I find some oil on the floor. Looks like the timing chain cover is leaking frown

So looks like my first sizeable bill on the way.....

I was planning on a twin plate clutch and I have a set of equal length manifolds and sports cats to fit. I know that one manifold and the cats would be off for the clutch anyway so having them fitted at the same time would only add the cost of changing one manifold.

Should I expect any similar benefit form having the timing cover gasket at the same time too or are there no 'common' operations involved?

Cheers

Hi Leigh (I’m on Seloc too)

It might not be the timing cover (this was my 1st suspicion when I found a leak), and if it was, it may not need fixing for years. But as mentioned on the other thread, best to get it up on a ramp. But I’m like you, I can’t be doing with oil leaks.

For info, the effort to replace the timing cover gasket is here:

Cheers - saw your other post.

I genuinely can't remember the last time I had a car with an oil leak of any sort!

Will take it round to my local friendly Lotus chap (he's a spannering genius) and get it up on his lift to have a good look.

Will report back.

When I found a drip of oil it was from the gearbox seal. Annoyingly only a few months earlier I had the gearbox oil replaced at service. Luckily I was having the gearbox removed for a twin plate clutch so this did save a bunch of labour.

Finally jacked the car up and got a look under it earlier today.

I has been sat for 10 days and had dripped a tiny bit on the floor again.

Looks like it's the front timing cover seal. There was no oil on the filter housing, nothing from the AC compressor that I could see and it was all collected at the bottom of the cover around the bolts. Some evidence of oil on the cross member behind (being blown onto it I guess) but that looked older / dirtier.

So looks like it needs doing........arse!

It is a pain and one of the worst design features of the car - both the front cover gasket itself and the amount of dismantling required to attend to it.
Fortunately, most of the time the fix is a permanent one and you shouldn't have to do it again - but this isn't guaranteed(!).

As it's such a common repair many dealerships will offer a fixed price to do the job. I was charged a few quid under £2k having mine done about five years ago at my local dealer. An indie may or may not be less expensive, but it's worth a phonecall at least.
It's the age old scenario of spending thousands to have a £1 part fitted. irked

Maddening isn't it?

I think I got prices of £1500-1800 as I asked a few specialists before I bought the car.

Oh well!

I recently had the timing chain seal on my DB9 changed. It's the first major repair in 7 years of ownership, so shouldn't complain.

Dealer quoted £3300

I had the job completed in a day at a significantly lower and less painful rate.

Also had the plugs changed at the same time as they were simple to get to.

Can I ask who did the job and now much?

PM me if you prefer.
