I drove to Switzerland with nothing more than a toilet break in my mk3 MR2. I don't recommend it.

Depends on your cash and what you’ll be doing.

I’ve done 2 European road trips in my wife’s Seat Ibiza 1.2 TDI (same as a Polo Bluemotion).

It’s great for distance work as it has high gearing for a small car (32.5MPH/1,000RPM) and delivers 60MPG easily. Due to the gearing, it’s surprisingly refined on the motorway.

I did 2,000 miles in it in one week in one trip, 2,500 miles in a week on the other. No aches or pains as modern cars are so bloody good these days.

I’ll be the first to admit that a bigger car would be better and more comfortable but it was hardly a hardship.

I see alot of references to Merc...but never owned or tried one...I think i should

Hardly a GT car, but I did over 600 miles in a day in a BMW 123d from France to the UK with no issues.
