Do I really need a diesel

Hi guys I think I may have come to the conclusion that I may need to sell my diesel and Purchase a petrol. I have summed up my mileage and I’m doing around 10-15k a year my work place is 6 Miles from my house down a dual carriage way through a small down and I’m there the only other driving I do I around town and a 19 mile commute once or twice a week this week I have been extra busy and done 120 miles but that’s been mostly short runs the usual and one long one to Birmingham. If where to go to petrol my choices would be.

. Audi s3
I have just got home from a 18 mile drive and the clocks stating 32mpg. my mpg to Birmingham was 45-49mpg steady driving if I where to change to a petrol is there any info on the cars I have stated things to look out for Comman faults one maybe being better then the other stuff like that the cars are all around the 14-16 plate mark.

On the longer runs you'll see a real world 35mpg 0n a longish run out of most of the cars you've listed above.

With the VAG cars cam chain tensioners can be an issue, but to be honest with you I'd be looking for the best Megane Trophy/Cup S I could find.

Hi mate thanks for your reply and thank you for the vag info. It’s going to be a hard decision i have heard the 1 series has gear box whine ? And the Audi has terrible understeer I have also been considering the fr300 which is on par with the golf from what I have been told

I haven't had any gearbox issues with the ones I've sourced but I have heard that some have had issues, I'd also say take a look at the 3/435i at it's every bit as good as the M135i:

No. Petrols can be economical if you want and the government seem to want to make running a diesel harder and harder.

Not that I'd ever recommend getting in my way on a bicycle to anyone, but there is a bloke at work who does a ~25 miles round trip to work and back on his bicycle regularly.

Hi guys thanks for all the info my original plan was to buy something like a 334d xdrive or a 535d but only thing stopping me is the miles I do will it cope and will the mpg any better then a petrol I only keep my cars 12 months so not too long haha I may take a look into the 335i or the 435i is there any issues to watch out for on those and i do like an Audi but the insides just don’t do it for me haha

When I was 17 and a student with no money, diesel wasn't even a thing. I managed a 60 mile round trip for two years to have "relations" with my girlfriend. I'm 45 next month and lucky enough that I've never had to buy a diesel car. I've had longer commutes but the last few years I've lived 10 minutes away from work. The only thing I would say is that I have an M135i and as great as it is, if I did more miles like you I'd get frustrated at the small petrol tank. I'm used to the rubbish fuel economy (not had a car in the last 20 years that averages more than 25 mpg) but having to fill up every 10 days or so is a pain if you're used to mega mile diesels and don't fill up so much.

Hi mate thanks for your reply I’m 21 and the main brunt of my miles is to my partners house which is 19 Miles there and 19 Miles back. I’m putting around 40 pounds in my Mercedes at the moment and that’s giving me 250-290miles if I scrape the tank haha and that will give me just over half a tank which will last me between 7 to 10 days silly question I know but do you ever use eco mode in your m135i if so does it make a difference

Eco mode does make a difference but tbh, if you’re considering running it all the time in that mode you probably are looking at the wrong car!

Eco would be mainly used for round town till I get on the twisty B roads then may become joyful haha I have seen some people getting 35+ plus mpg out of there m140i not sure on the golf r mpg or the audi s3 also can anyone recommend any insurance company's being 21 it will be fun to insure any of these cars I have listed about at the moment I'm paying 1500-1600 a year for my c220

Well my BMW Z4 Coupe is showing an average of 33.4 mpg on the OBC just now, but I don't use it for local trips so it's mostly 30+ mile drives on dual-carriageways/Motorways outside of rush hours!
