I was tidying up my contacts list on my phone earlier as I have duplicates, badly formatted and out of date entries.
Whilst carrying out the above trivial task I came across two that belonged to colleagues/friends who have both deceased.
I went to delete them but could not bring myself to do it. I’m not sure why, maybe the thought of being disrespectful to their memories, I am quite sentimental that way.

Any one else have the same?

Er, no. It's a phone number, and if they're dead they are unlikely to answer if if you ring them.
I don't see the point in keeping it. Photographs, letters, belongings etc yes, but a contract entry in a phone book? Really?

Not the same but..

One of my colleagues passed away a couple of years ago. We moved site completely from the time he went on the sick, including the locker room. Months went by and we had a purge on unused lockers, re purposing those of people who had left etc.

I went in with the bolt cutters to remove the padlocks. Except Glenn's. I just couldn't do that.

Weird, I know.

I can understand that feeling. It's a bit like shutting the door on a section of your life that you know you can't get back but are unwilling to totally abandon.

Yes I had that when I lost my good friend Matt a couple of years ago, it's strange but it felt like it was an explicit act of acknowledgement that I could no longer call him.

The hardest was doing it for my mum when she passed, but I think that's fairly common when it's close family.

Mobile numbers get reused by the mno / mvno. Would be weird to get called by the dead persons number, though.

Yep, my parents' phone number is still on my phone as "Mum and Dad" despite the fact that Dad died last Christmas.

It upsets me a little to see that kind of thing so I erase it.
After my Grandparents died they were clearing out the house and I got a pretty decent cordless phone system for use at work. It's still got everyone's numbers on it they knew and I can't see how to erase them or find the time to research it!
Maybe today is the day to sit and fathom it out, clear out the ghosts so to speak.

And then what about people's FB pages?

Yeh it's a weird one.
My Grans number is on there from about 10 yrs ago, and my mate committed suicide on Christmas day last year and I can't bring myself to delete his number.

I still have him on my Strava as well smile

Yeh I'm with you on this.

Its a subtle reminder, just like it reminded you of them and prompted this post.

My dad suffered from MS and prior to his death lived in disability housing with a coded lock on the door so we could get in and out. I had, and still have that code saved on my phone. Strange feeling but don't ever feel inclined to delete it, even though it has absolutely no use or meaning anymore. Just a nod to old times sake I guess.

Yes - there are quite a few, I've had a bad run of luck in the last few years. And I've not deleted them either.

I find social media profiles of friends that have passed away very strange to look through. They're just stuck in time 'forever'!

I do exactly what you've mentioned.

My absolute best friend was lost at sea 10 years ago (the anniversary of him going missing has just passed). I've still got his phone number in my contacts list and, pathetically, still ring it once a year or so even though the number no longer exists.

We had to wait 10 years for confirmation of death. His body was never found.

It may sound stupid, but the guy meant a great deal to me and I don't want his name missing from my contacts list, so I understand.

Just tried it. Her answerphone message is still there telling me she can't can't come to the phone right now, but I'm not sure whether to believe that she'll get back to me later.

Just off for a cuppa. frown
