Apologies if this has been asked before, but I'm considering getting a Cat N Triumph Scrambler.

Is there an accurate online valuation tool for motorcycles and how much will Cat N status affect the value?

Will the insurance premium be significantly increased? I've read the insurance companies require an MOT but the bike is 2017 so not due an MOT.

Thanks in advance.

Insurance is totally dependent on the insurer - most don't care, my current one wanted a certificate etc. which I told them to either back down on or refund my policy in full (they backed down).

Valuation is difficult but like cars -30% versus non-write off isn't out of line but make sure its a keeper - much harder to sell.

All of my bikes have been ex-write off's but I get them from the salvage yards so see what state they're in before repair (I don't touch Cat-S), only go after cosmetic damage and don't actually fix it and never pay more than £1k, my theft excess......

If it's a Trumpet Scrambler it'll still be overpriced. Take a look at the new 650 Royal Enfields.

Just been informed the Cat N damage was a snapped oil pump chain causing damage to internal casings and the clutch. All damaged parts have either been replaced or repaired.

If you had a failure of an engine component on your bike would you go to the insurer? If you did, would they pay out?

Yeah, that's weird for an insurance write-off. Maybe it was extended warranty insurance, rather than road insurance, but not heard of it before. Warranty insurers normally pay for repairs. I would be worried by this bike.

Speculative suggestion - engineers report recommended replacing whole engine and gearbox. Someone has instead just installed a new oil pump. That might be perfectly okay. If the engine was shut off within seconds of the oil failure then there's unlikely to be much other damage. But if it was ridden for any substantial period with no active lubrication, the internals may be worn or damaged throughout.

I think I would want to see the insurance report for the write-off. Oil pump failure isn't the real issue, it's what happened after that.
