I've tried using the search function, but its PH so useless!

I've got a 2014 Golf 2.0 TDI DSG. I'm tempted to remap it. I've never done it before, so after some advice.

Firstly is it worth it? Do I need to upgrade anything else of the car?

Are there any companies which are recommended? Or ones to avoid.

Yes definitely worth it. The standard mapping is boring. Nothing else needed. Get it done already.

I've got a similar question, is it better to go for a remap or tuning box? Any recommendations for companies?

Id always go remap personally and use someone reputable, Revo are well regarded but I've seen both shark performance and superchips bluefin recommended as they provide a self tune unit to you that you can install/remove the map yourself.
Some tuning boxes have good feedback but surely can only alter the fuel rail pressure?

Had a Revo on my MkV VW TDi GTD. Was quite expensive but made an enjoyable difference.

There was (then) a theory that if the VW dealer updated the ECU software it would over-write the map. Revo dealer offered a free re-install if that happened. A bit of a faff to go back, and another faff at the VW dealer when they wanted me to sign a disclaimer after I told them not to update the ECU, then they updated it anyway.

Revo offered a pluggy-in stick, so the owner could switch the map back to standard, or re-install 'tuned' from the OBD socket. That worked OK but was expensive. Good resale on Ebay, eventually.

On the next diesel cars I fitted a BlueSpark Pro+Boost tuning box. Five minutes install. It has five levels of 'strewth!' - the middle one being fine. Advantage is that BlueSpark will adapt the box/cables for your next car if you change it, for £60 or so. About £200 or so.

Box intercepts the common-rail pressure sensor and turbo boost sensor, so ECU produces more of both. Very good unit with good phone support. Comes with a bypass plug to replace box when car is being serviced. No apparent downsides over Revo. More torque at lower revs very noticable.

Some insurance companies don't accept 'modifications', others do. Brake, drivetrain and tyre wear increases. Unless driven like a granny, fuel consumption also increases. May invalidate any warranty. MOT tests have changed since then, so more fueling may mean more emissions so bypass for MOT is useful.

I still have the BlueSpark box, but haven't put it on the Jetta TDi as it's still under warranty. VW can apparently now detect re-maps and ECU writes, even if they are removed. Don't know if they can detect removed tuning boxes, but fueling and boost pressures seem to be logged in the ECU. (?)

Thanks!

Revo were one that I was looking at. £400 which I don't think is too bad.

Annoyingly my current insurance company don't allow mods, so won't be getting it until next year at the earliest anyway.

Not too fussed about warranty issues as its out of the VW one and the one I got from the garage is ste anyway.

I'd give these guys a try, friend of mine used them for his MK7 Golf R remap.
