Ford Pinto 2.0 timing belt
Discussion
Im currently replacing the timing belt on a 2.0 pinto, unfortunately of unknown origin, but the new belt that is apparently correct for the engine is quite different to the one taken off the car.
Were there two different types fitted over the years? The one I have taken off has much larger teeth that the new one supplied although length and number of teeth appear the same.
Any ideas?

As far as I can recall.
There were only 2 belts for the pinto, 1 for the 1600, 1 for the 2000. Qtb 101 and 102 if I remember the QH part numbers corectly.
Done a few over the years, but all a while ago now. Never remember any different teeth type, they were all quite big teeth I think.
Timing belts over the years did change teeth type, but this was more a split/indent at the tip of the tooth to allow tighter bending around pulleys etc.
Not sure any of that helps though.

There is no way that new belt can replace the used belt and I gather the OP knows this
Yep the new small tooth belt is totally loose in the grooves in the pulley as you can imagineI have done a bit of digging and have found reference to people doing a 'round tooth' belt conversion on Pintos so something I need to dig into more incase that is what has been done.
The car is a 1967 Cortina rally car but had the 2.0 fitted in the early 90's
Found an old thread on a Ford forum relating to this problem, and had a new belt delivered today on the information on that thread.
It has something to do with people fitting Cosworth cranks and pulleys to allow the stronger and wider belt to be used. The new belt is 24mm wide as opposed to the standard 19mm Pinto belt and matched perfectly with the one I have take off the car. Looks like this modification was done in the cars past hence the standard belt being so different.
Gates part number was 5256XS if anyone comes across this thread in the future. Same number of teeth and length, but the belt is wider as stated and the teeth are the larger round profile as my above picture.
