Before cash vanishes completely let us regale each other with tales of the folding stuff.

Feel free to add anything but my questions are:

What is the most of your own cash you have held in your grubby little paws? [me - a paltry £4000],

and, what is the most cash you've seen anywhere? [me - I had to pass £150,000 to securicor (christmas week takings) in bags of £25k at a time]

We will all be waiting for the first 7 figure shout...

Back when I worked in PC World in the early 2000s, and pretty much at the height of computer adoption, I'd regularly count 5-6 figures on a daily basis - and that was just one store.

Handled in notes to buy something - £55k

Picked it up in Sunderland in nondescript brown envelopes from bank. Flew from Newcastle to Heathrow then tube to the boat yard where I bought my first motorcruiser.

No questions asked by airport security or the brokerage yard with me turning up with so much cash (I was 22 btw)

A few years later (after selling the boat on) I got a call from the police investigating the yacht brokers for fraud and money laundering (the owner was ex-London met plod) and I had to give a statement and proof of funds etc. for my transaction. Once all submitted I never heard anything else about it all.

This isn't the most, but it made me a bit nervous at the time because of the environment.

Got paid by a company based in Dover, Delaware. Paid in German deutsch marks, about £12k worth. In cash. Handed over to me in a nightclub in Munich by the chap's local agent who looked like Nana Mouskouri who had brought her chubby blonde "friend" with her. I was quite drunk. Worried sick that I was going to get mugged on the way back home. Probably not the best idea getting paid there.

In a casino in South of France, doing my usual, playing blackjack at the lowest level table, probably 5 euros a hand,.
There's a game of Texas Holden (poker) going on at a nearby table and I wonder if I could join.
Guy gets up at the same time as me to go and get chips and takes out a massive roll of notes. As he's handing them across I suddenly realised that what I thought were 50s were actually 500 euro notes.
I thought better of asking to join their game.Took my habitual 100 euro loss on the blackjack and thanked my lucky stars.

In the early 1990s my dad came home from work with over £100k (think it was £108000.00). He sold farm machinery and a poor farmer had just paid for a new combine and a tractor in cash!

My brother and I had all our friends from the village round to see it.

When I worked for Sainsbury's back in my student days I used to have access to the cash room and also occasionally used to be the second person present when the ATM's were re-stocked, so I should imagine that I've seen many 10's if not 100's of thousands of £'s.

The most that I've handled personally was approx £14k when a guy paid for a car in cash about 5 years ago; what a ball ache to count it, had a guy buy a car last week who rocked up with just shy of £9k in a carrier bag (yes literally); he had come via seeing and intending to buy but didn't, a private sale car.

The brick sized lump in the bag did look decidedly unimpressive considering the amount there, we wouldn't accept it.

I worked for M&S as a student 30+ years ago in the cash counting room, pretty sure we were counting and handing over to Securicor a six figure sum in cash in the weeks before Christmas.

Most I've held of my own was just over £5000 after winning a poker tournament.

Most 'cash' I've seen was in a poker cash game, there was just over a million on the table.

A few years ago my closest mate was given €15k in cash by his wealthy grandparents and asked me to exchange for £ as there is a exchange place near my office.

I went in and filled in a form advising it wasn't my money so they refused to exchange.

Didn't think anything of it afterwards until the police turned up at 7am one morning at my house asking questions. They were a bit grump with me, probably as it was a waste of time for them and gave me a ticking off which is fair enough.

The funny thing was me and the missus had been to fremantle prison and treated her to some prisoners PJs.... Which she was wearing when she opened the door to them...

It's never as big as you'd expect (fnarr fnarr). I had about 30k EUR in tips from a summer season a few years back. In 500 EUR notes it is a disappointingly small package (snigger).

What was their reasoning for the ticking off? It’s fair enough for them to ask questions, fair enough for the exchange place to refuse to deal with you but you didn’t do anything wrong?

I’ve had £6k in my pocket all week. Took it out to buy a car then the sale fell through. It’s in £210 note equivalent though so not that thick.

Most of my cash: just under £20k for my elise

Most I’ve handled: about £80k petty cash in CFA. Used to wheel it round in a Nora batty type bag. Wouldn’t go in the safe so whenever I went out of my hotel room I would just put it in the wardrobe under a coat lol. Got annoying after a while (cash drops were really irritating and a little dangerous given the locale) so I refuse to be responsible for it these days.

Many years ago, we used to do some trade with Nigeria, which as you might imagine was interesting.

I had some money due which was late, but eventually I got the phone call, "it will arrive later this afternoon."

So, I collected £9500, all in mixed £100 folds, in a carrier bag, at 10 past 5 on Christmas Eve in the Blockbuster Car park in Dewsbury.

I didn't waste much time getting out of there at all.

It took 90 minutes to count, reconcile and re-organise to pay into the bank on Dec 28th, and gave a new meaning to the term "dirty money", my hands were filthy.

Never again.
