Mobil 1 0/40 Fully synthetic £26 all in
Discussion
Aren't there two types ? a basic mineral one and a synth or semi synth one
Tivs get too hot for mineral oils, I was told, that's why people have to change them every 3000 miles or "after every track day"
The expensive one should be fine (guessing), I really like the idea of an oil that'll stick to your engine internals while you're waiting for the weekend, (not that I care 'cause I use mine every day)
Anyone else

Confused of Guildford..
...my car used to have Mobil 1 and as per Lord Batty of Comptons requirements now has Castrol Magnetec.
I asked him if rather than chuck the Mobil 1 I could top up with it until it ran out. He said OK.
Assume therefore that both are synthetic.
Please someone clarify before I make a big mistake.

Well I'd be interested in pros and cons of Magnatec as like Ben, I've always thought tht it sounded like quite a good idea..
Allegedly and Allegedly, the story goes that while testing Magnatec, they ran it on several engines and found when they stripped it down that there was this brown film on all the parts. The engineers threw up their hands in shock when a marketing guy said they could sell this as a feature as the oil obviously coats the metal bits. everyone was happy and so the marketing campaign was born. I don't know how urban myth this is but many of the engine builders I have taked to don't like it because of the gunge it leaves in their engines.
As for having oil that coats and stays on the metal... all oils do this anyway but they don't charge you for it. I think there is even a test for it in the oil specs anyway. Dunk a bit of metal in oil and leave it. Even after a few days there will still be a film on it.

Jon: I have to say I'd be pretty irritated if my service guy changed my car onto a completely different oil without consulting me.
I must say I am a little concerned by him saying that you can chuck any old crap in though, as I was under the impression that you should not mix oil of different grades.

So how do they get away with "better protection as soon as you turn the key" or is that similar to "Carlsberg is probably the most average lager in the world" ?
