Insuring another car
Discussion
I currently own and insure a car that I have 5+ years no-claim bonus. I am thinking about buying another vehicle for the summer- either an MPV or small camper, so that I can carry my kayak/mountain bike and maybe bed down for the night.
I have gone on comparison sites to get an idea of cost to insure. It asks about your no-claims bonus and so I have stated what have but, would that apply to this second vehicle or would they start you off again from zero?
I am currently insured with Admiral.

They'd start you off at zero as the NCD is on the other car. I was fortunate that my insurer (Esure) mirrored my NCD on both of my cars but when I inquired about my third car they said they'd changed their policy so that no one gets mirrored NCD any more
Might be worth giving Admiral a call?

The insurance thieves insist that the NCD applies only to one car and not the driver, so you'll have to bend over I'm afraid.
And I'd steer well clear of Admiral. Try NFU.
I agree- having been insured with NFU years back but, a ban since then means i am shafted for a few more months until i cross the magic 5 year threshold, so i take Admiral to save £££. And I'd steer well clear of Admiral. Try NFU.

But it works both ways. If you have more than one car and have built up bonus on all of them, crash one and you only lose the bonus on that one. Your other bonuses remain intact. When that happens, you're glad it it applies only to one car and not the driver. TwigtheWonderkid said:

This also theoretically works with mirroring. Set the NCB on your least driven car, then mirror to your main cars. If you crash the main car, the NCB is unaffected as it's actually applied to your least driven car which is sat at home safe and sound.
I don't think mirroring works the way I think you think it does. It's not a live thing, just a one off. Sets your new bonus to be the same as the old, then they are idependent.Bert

Hm are you sure? When I got mirrored at Admiral, car 1 had 2 years NCB, car 2 mirrored but showed 0 years NCB. When year 4 renewal came through car 2 was still 0 and car 1 was 3 yearsBert
My broker tells me that claims tend to follow the driver. So surely its the driver who earns the no claims not the car.
My wife and I have been insured with a Motor Traders Policy for the last 30 years. I`ve just retired so I had to start from scratch insuring our two daily drivers. My wife had a claim last year and I`m claim free for over five years. We went with LV multi car, they accepted her as having 1 year NCB and me Full NCB.
I`ve also got my classic on a separate classic car policy earning full no claims.

Many years ago I tried to insure multiple cars.
The brokers told me that each insurance would start at 0 no claims, but that a claim would reflect on all policies.
Hence a claim on a motorbike policy would affect all car ones as well.
Fortunately at the time, the brokers were across the road from where I worked - and I ended up endlessly swapping one car policy between a variety of vehicles - in those there was no charge for this (or at least I don't recall one).
Insurance isn't compulsory in New Zealand, so I rarely bother with it these days - so much simpler.

A claim has to be declared against all policies obviously as that is one of the insurance questions (any claims last 5 years) - which is a shame as a recent bike theft has impacted all my cars, and my partners policies (named driver), I think the point was it doesn't impact your NCB on other policies.
