I'm looking to get a jet ski in the next week or so and am a bit out of touch with what's good or not.

Budget will be around 5k and the faster and more reliable the better.

So far i've shortlisted a Yamaha Waverunner GP1300R that someone i know i selling.

I do like the seadoo's but i believe they are quite unreliable?

Everyone swears by Yams for reliability and you can;t really go far wrong with any of the 4 strokes. If you want economical low maintenance then steer clear of any superchargers.Certainly the newer NA Yams really are a superb thing to ride, not sure about older models as i've always been a Seadoo man.
Not sure why Seadoo have that reputation. We have had seadoos since 1996 and never really had any bother. We still have a 2006 wake edition that we've hardly spent a penny on. We just can't bear to sell it. Every season we say "if she starts, she stays" and we just hook the battery back up and away she goes.
Just make sure you get one thats been looked after/flushed (or freshwater use only) and be prepared to spend a few quid as anything that goes fast, on water, needs looking after.

We had Yamahas, now have Seadoos. Neither of them especially reliable with sea water use. We throw £££s at them every year. New superchargers and intercoolers, impellers, throttlebodies, MAP sensors, OTAS sensors. I can't understand why anyone would chose to own one but if I had to, I would go for which ever one had the fewest electrical bits and easiest engine compartment access.

It will only be run on freshwater if that makes a difference.

Probably a massive difference in corrosion and damage, but I personally have no experience of fresh water use.

I have a 2012 seadoo gti130. The whole Yamaha v seadoo is bullst. Both brands can breakdown. I have had this ski for 2 years and its never let me down unlike the 2 Yamaha riders I ride with who have had issues.
Stay away from two stroke if you can as they are thirsty and take a bit more maintaining. Find a none supercharged yam or seadoo and you should be good.

As the other posters say, stay away from superchargers and you'll be fine.

Seadoo's are good now, BRP has really upped the quality. Rotax engine and electrics are strong.

You'll be changing the impeller and untangling it more than anything else...

The Gp1300r is a 2 stroke so while reliability shouldn't necessarily be worse, proper maintenance and rebuilds need to be factored in. Fast in a straight line though. My friends did over 60mph (dial indicated)

I had a 2007 fxho 160 with a few Riva bolt on parts, bought for £4600. Loved it. Had 200+ hrs when I sold it for £3900 and had zero problems. Used in salt water by me and the previous owner. Did a dial indicated 59mph.

A friend had a 15k 300bhp seadoo and while it was ridiculously fast, I'd rather have the NA power delivery and reliability of a non-charged ski.

I only sold mine through lack of use after buying a stand up.

I had a 2003 (?) seadoo GTX about 5 years ago which I owned for 3 years, never a single problem and was using in salt water all the time. 1500cc non supercharged and did an indicated 60mph. As with everything if you take good care of it it will last. Each and every time I came back in made sure it was cleaned and flushed through with fresh water.

When I bought it, it was having an intermittent issue where it would go into limp mode. Previous owner swore it only started happening the day I test rode it and no idea why it was happening. I banked on it being a simple fix and paid a bit below the asking price. Cleaned all the electrical connections and engine and put it all back together and never saw the issue again.

A few months later ended up on a forum where I was reading the exact same issue, on the exact same model, about 2 months before I bought it. The guy was saying he lent it to his mate who had sunk the ski. He was asking for advice as he was about to sell it to a "young idiot who had no clue" and was asking if he should be up front with the buyer.

On his profile I found it was the guy I had bought it from, and the ski he was talking about was the one I had bought (registration number was visible in the pictures) smile

I got a 2011 Yamaha waverunner FX SHO in the end.

1800cc supercharged and meant to be really reliable so will see how it goes this season.
