Speed cameras do not cut fatal accidents new government research reveals.
Scientists examined 149 accident blackspots in 30 mph zones throughout the country and they found cameras had little or no effect on deaths or serious injuries.
The five year study was carried out by Liverpool University researchers.
Dr Linda Mountain, who led the team said the case for Gatso cameras in built up areas has been "exaggerated".
She said the only traffic calming method found to have a significant impact on fatal and serious accidents on urban roads was speed humps.
She added, "It was a surprise that we couldnt detect a significant change in fatal and serious accidents at camera sites. I had expected to find some reduction".
More than 2 million motorists were caught in speed traps last year.
The findings cast doubt on Government claims that cameras have cut deaths by 100.
The ABD last night said the study proved speed traps are a "stealth tax".
Spokesman Tony Vickers said " Cameras are simply not working-unless the aim is to make a profit."

But humps cause more casualties because emergency services cannot move so quickly.
Is there nothing we can do to reduce KSIs in built-up areas? (he asks rhetorically). Well we could try improved driver training, a law on jay-walking, and more onus put on pedestrians to behave safely. But there's no money in it.
It occurred to me this morning that if/when the European court judgements go against the cameras then there could be millions of drivers wanting to sue the Scumera partnerships. Will the government pay out? No, of course not! The partnerships aren't run by government but by the local authorities, police forces, magistrates courts, etc, so the government's off the hook. So who will fund the massive payouts? I can only assume it will be ratepayers. Perhaps we'd all better get a few points before the cases come to court, if only so that we can afford the increased council tax that's surely coming.....

Road humps kill more than they save in London due to increased ambulance response times
Years ago, they taught pedestrian safety in schools, with the onus on the pedestrian to look out for themselves before stepping into the road. Nowadays, it seems pedestrians expect someone else to look out for their safety. Unfortunately they are mistaken in their belief that their wellbeing is someone elses responsibility.
Sooner or later common sense will prevail and the onus for crossing the road will be returned to the pedestrian. It's just a question of how many have to die before the pratnerships and government wise up.
It looks like they're finally realising what everyone else has known for years!
