PH seems to be the best place to ask.....

Later this week I have to be in Derby for 7am, as the wife has a small operation on her hand (hopefully to stop it dipping in my bloody wallet).

So i will be leaving her in the cpaable hands of her consultant at 7am & hanging around the area to bring her home late afternoon with some luck.

I have enough entertainment in my car, quite happy to sit in there with a tablet / laptop / radio kit but wondered if there was somewhere ideal to park, not too far away from the new hospital on the SW side of Derby.

Don't fancy sitting in the hospital car park, a lay-by would be noisy and no toilets / coffee machines .... open to all good ideas please smile

If the weather is like it is currently, I would park up by the Derwent river somewhere and take a Riverside walk, it is actually a beautiful river that flows through the centre of Derby, done it a few times whilst up there.
It really is a nice, well kept, tidy River, with good pathways, lovely and peaceful with numerous cafes and bars dotted around.

Remember Nottingham is 15 minutes away and the edge of the peaks are not much further if you head towards Matlock.

Ashbourne is less than half an hour away and is quite nice place to spend a few hours

I knew you guys would come up with ideas - great thanks.

Ashbourne etc, lovely idea but I don't want to venture too far. Derwent river sounds great, will see what I can find & if you have any good pointers to pop in the nav, that would be brilliant.

Appreciated

Velodrome at Derby Arena if you’re into that kind of thing.
See what films are in at The Quad (little indie cinema in the city centre)
There were Da Vinci sketches on display at Derby Museum, not sure if that’s still on though.
Calke Abbey isn’t far out of the City if national trust places are your thing.

Any testing at donington?

Derby still has lots of industry, so it isnt the prettiest of places.
If you like industrial heritage, follow the old A6 along the river north towards matlock. From the worlds first factory up t'original mills before those yorkshire folk got invovled. Cromford village is a big mills museum.

There isnt much left, but can pay homage to ths original rolls royce factory. The facade and offices still exist
You cant see much, but there is a massive train factory in the middle of derby. Its odd to see london underground trains parked up...
Pottery places at denby and royal crown derby, both with museums
Buy me lunch??
Toyota factory on the outskirts

15 mins south is mercia marina, which is a nice place full of narrow boats where you can spend some timd

20mins further south is burton, with a massive brewing museum. Beer shops, breweries...

I presume that's in your helicopter?

Nottingham isn't 15 minutes away.

What about Markeaton Park, OP?

Not far from the hospital.

Brilliant response, thanks. I did wonder if anything was going on in Donny, maybe even a trackday to spectate if I can sneak in. Mercia marina sounds good too, another good way of passing an hour or two.

I saw that, looks as if it might be somewhere to chill for a while, it seems there's a Mc roadkill just outside the entrance, so that's a revolting lunch sorted smile

Thanks for the post, so many options now, I might need a week there smile

Depends where you define Derby to Nottingham. Bardill’s Island to Pentagon Island is less than 15 minutes but it’s Derby to Nottingham wink

Why not head up to Buxton / Bakewell for lunch.

Or Castleton for a walk up Mam Tor and lunch?
