My recently installed wireless network occasionally packs up , if I uninstall the usb driver , re-install , then plug the usb thingy in everything is ok. Is this just par for the course , or should it be more stable than that ?

Stop the windows wireless zero config service. It will fight with the netgear Wireless utility

Yes it should be more stable than that but it probably wont be.

Returned all my netgear wireless recently when it finally went from random crashes to packing up altogether.

Ended up getting a 3com office connect system for roughly the same price. Ok so its only 54Mbs instead of the NG 108Mbs but as the 108 only made the NG fall over more often it never really worked at that speed. The 3Com has been solid as a rock since 30 seconds after plugging in and does have features like Xjack aerial on the pc card and free channel detect on the AP.

IMO take it back to the store as not fit for purpose or just plain faulty and get either linksys if you really want a consumer product or something designed for small businesses such as the 3com office connect range.

Try this update:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;822603

I had problems with USB on my XP media center. It would randomly "lose" the driver for my USB 54g card. This patch sorted it.

FWIW I have netgear 54g kit throughout my house and it hasn't missed a beat in the last 6 months..............

Edited to add.........if you have the latest XP service pack, you should have this patch anyway. Are you on SP2?

undet the advanced settings in the network connection of your wireless device, untick the box for 802.1x authentication and then the one that says something like' let windows control my wireless network'
