What do we think to this?

https://finder.porsche.com/gb/en_GB/911-Carrera-S-...

I quite like it.

Doesn't have Sport Chrono, PSE or Cruise Control

i'm ok with those bits being missing. Is it likely to be a big problem come resale in a couple of years time?

I would say yes for chrono & PSE, but not so much of a concern for cruise control. Have you tried a car with the chrono and PSE options - I think you should, as you may decide you can live without them. The price should reflect their absence in any case, so it boils down to what you can afford and want too.

thanks. Yes tried 4 cars so far. 3 had PSE. does sound different but maybe its more different to people outside compared to what i heard inside

was a test drive with a car dealer sat next to me on all drives so didn't really get going too fast

sport chrono - definitely changes the car's characteristics. but was also a bit manic.

i reckon i can live without them

current issue of total 911 has a 6 page article on 991 gen 1 buying guide and used values by some well known dealers - worth a read.

don't agree sport chrono critical - I don't have it on one car and do on another - and frankly I could do without the stopwatch on the dash that I never use. unless you're tracking it a lot not really useful. sport button standard and plenty good enough.

cruise desirable by many, and pse - and both are easy retro-fits at OPC if you want them. sport chrono also retro-fit at OPC but without the stopwatch (which would be ideal as almost nobody uses it anyway)

as to the car you're looking at - not much options on it - and even though miles low - price is pretty toppy for what it is. room to negotiate there I reckon.

Sorry for the semi hijack but are there any other recommended options for the 991.1 other than sports chrono, PSE ?

Btw OP love the interior, much better than standard black interiors

What’s people’s thoughts on the manual 991.1 ?

I currently have a Golf R in manual and like that. If I were to get a 911 I wouldn't plan on using it for commuting in traffic etc so I don’t think PDK is vital, but I’ve seen varying comments that the early manual gearbox. Some say they think it is not great but then others who say it’s their preference. I appreciate its a personal choice but are there some objective concerns on the early manual. One car I’m interested in is base 991 rather than S if that makes a difference.

Thanks

I’ve picked up my new car
It’s pdk
Which is very very good. Shifts quicker that I could, saves me thinking about what gear I’m in, and I’ve got the flappy paddles for when I want to take over and select a gear or two lower 😀

I reckon that unless you are buying something for the track then pdk wins. No need for manual

@converse I believe >90% of 991’s were specced as PDK so it’s very hard to find a manual anyway. Looks like Paragon have a base model manual.
Think I am right in saying the box is structurally the same as the PDK box but with a manual stick attached to it hence the 7th gear.
I guess usual argument is that in future is the PDK easier to sell because the audience is much wider- clearly as 90% specced it that way, or does the rarity of the manual help the value of those, but much smaller audience, at the moment anyway.
I’ve driven both versions but only pootling around, I’ve not eg tracked one, so, saving a few tenths on gear changes doesn’t bother me. A high mileage user who encounters a lot of traffic etc will likely want PDK.

Thanks all. Useful info, especially the fact that ~90% are PDK, so a fair point about the reduced resale audience for a manual car. Guess I need to try and drive both models as well.

Does anyone know if the manual gearbox got any changes during the 991 life ? And if so when was that?

I think PDK wins on the track, too.

All 3 of my Porsche cars were manuals. My exposure to PDK has been in loaner cars but PDK shifts very fast and the change up or down from one gear to the next is very smooth.

In fact an early test of a PDK equipped car on a road course had the transmission shifting mid turn and the driver and passenger were quite amazed that the shift did not upset the car like a manual shift could have. In fact had it been a manual equipped car very likely neither driver or the passenger had he been driving would have shifted during the turn.

While I never got a PDK equipped Porsche one of my current cars, a Hellcat (6.2l V8 with a supercharger and 707hp), has the 8 speed automatic and this transmission shifts very quickly (in around 160mS) and as a result the car's acceleration is ballistic compared to a similar car equipped with a 6-speed manual.

@converse I did read a fair bit of press complaining a little bit about the shift quality on the very early manual 991’s so that would mean 2012 plate cars roughly, apparently there was a small tweak as production went on but I have nothing to confirm this, just ironing out small glitches as many new cars have in first 6 months or so. The press then seemed to think the launch of the 991 GTS brought another improvement in the shift quality. I read they the second generation cars including the Carrera T also feel slightly better again.
So it’s hard to tell. I wouldn’t have the ability to tell the difference but the journalists seemed to detect subtle tweaks as the 991 evolved.
I have driven quite a few miles in a 991.1 manual and really liked the feel of it but the only time I had to concentrate was going from 6th to 5th, where I found there was a small risk of hooking 3rd. Probably lack of skill on my part.
