This is an ode to an old faithful companion, my SDV6 Disco Commercial.
The Disco has been part exchanged for a very different daily now, however I felt that the loyal old beast deserves a thread in memory. It might also be useful for any potential owners who are mulling over whether to buy one or not. You should...
Bought 3 years ago as a company car - with me being a tight fisted Yorkshireman, the relatively diminutive BIK was hard to ignore. Then there's the added bonus of owning such a class-less car which is incredibly practical and versatile.
A lot of owners stick proper seats in the back of these making them a cut price full fat Discovery. Not me, having that massive loading bed came in very useful a lot of the time - plus you don't get the inconvenience of having to ferry multiple passengers around.
My first proper journey in the car was down to watch the Silverstone Classic which happened to be on a very cold spring day. Not cold when you've got a big comfy heated armchair to sit in, oh and a heated steering wheel for when one's icy fingers need a light toasting.
I chose to leave the car pretty much as it left the factory - modifying these, however tempting, can get very expensive!
The only thing I did was put some "Land Rover" puddle lights in the door. £20 on eBay..worth a punt.
Having a commercial as a company car would lead you to think I used the big loading space for work on a daily basis - Sadly not....It was very handy during the shooting season however,. Big dog, guns, cartridges and the rest of the tackle struggled to make it feel cramped!
My fondest memory of my 3 years with the Disco was without a doubt when the UK ground to halt during the Beast From The East. I literally couldn't get the car stuck. I went out of my way down little unploughed lanes trying my best to challenge the 4 wheel drive system and nothing phased it. I'm sure if I had tried to drive to the North Pole I would have been in a spot of bother, but as far as home turf was concerned, it was unstoppable.
You may remember part of the M62 being closed for a couple of days due to the build of up snow and stuck vehicles. I had to catch a plane from Liverpool then.......and I live in Leeds.
Yep, still managed to get on that plane.
So, this is my farewell to probably the best car I have ever owned. It really was a suitable tool for every job. Even driving it quickly on twisty roads was fun. It didn't have much grip on the squealing all season tyres, and the body rolled around like a ship in a storm....but you sit in an elevated driving position which enables you to see a lot more of the road ahead. This turned every b-road into a game of momentum!
So, if it's the best car I've ever owner, why did I sell of it? Life's too short not to try new/different things. Simple as that.
Oh, and the fridge was too small...
